Diesel powered Tesla?
Okay, let's be real – who else has had a moment of pure brain fog trying to understand electric vehicles (EVs) when you’re so used to traditional fuel? I swear, when I first got my Cybertruck, I actually found myself looking for the 'fuel tank door releases,' thinking, 'Where on earth do I put the diesel in this thing?' It sounds wild now, but after years of driving diesel trucks, it was just instinct! I literally couldn't figure out where to fill this thing up at for a good few minutes, and I had to laugh at myself. Anyone else been there? You're definitely not alone if you've ever had a similar 'can't figure it out' moment with a new EV! The truth, of course, is that Teslas, including the Cybertruck, are 100% electric vehicles. They don't use gasoline or diesel at all. Instead of a 'fuel tank,' they have a battery pack that needs to be charged, much like your phone. This is a huge shift from what many of us are accustomed to, especially if you're coming from a heavy-duty diesel background where range and towing power are typically tied to fuel capacity. So, why the confusion about 'diesel Tesla'? I think it stems from a few places. First, the Cybertruck looks like a futuristic, robust truck, and for many, 'truck' immediately equals 'diesel' or 'gasoline.' Second, there's a natural curiosity about how these new electric trucks compare to their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts, leading to questions like 'can it do what a diesel can?' or 'what kind of fuel does it use?' The biggest difference, obviously, is how you power it. Instead of visiting a gas station, you'll be plugging in your Cybertruck. This can be at home with a Level 2 charger, or on the road at Tesla Superchargers or other public charging stations. The "fueling" experience is completely different—often slower, but also more convenient if you charge at home overnight. You wake up to a "full tank" every morning! From an environmental perspective, electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, which is a major draw for many. Diesel engines, while becoming more efficient, still release pollutants. Performance is another area where things diverge. Diesel trucks are known for their high torque, excellent for towing and hauling. EVs like the Cybertruck offer instant torque, which provides incredible acceleration and impressive towing capabilities, often surpassing traditional trucks in certain metrics. Maintenance is also generally simpler for EVs, with fewer moving parts and no oil changes, spark plugs, or fuel filters to worry about – definitely no diesel exhaust fluid! If you're new to the EV world, my biggest piece of advice is to embrace the change. Don't go looking for the 'Marl' or 'Mini' fuel caps like I initially did! Take some time to understand charging infrastructure, plan longer trips around charging stops, and get used to the quiet, powerful ride. It’s a learning curve, but once you get past that initial 'where do I put the diesel' moment, it's a truly amazing experience.
