Hair growth journey — trim edition ✂️
Before & after a much-needed trim ✂️
My goal is to grow my hair to waist length, and this is where I’m currently at in the journey. During the winter months, I focus even more on maintaining healthy ends because dryness can easily lead to breakage.
I have low porosity roots and high porosity ends with a 3C curl pattern, so moisture balance and protection are key for me right now. I mainly wear protective styles and limit heat to keep my hair healthy through the colder season.
This trim was about maintaining length while prioritizing hair health slow growth, but intentional care 🤍

As someone with a mix of low porosity roots and high porosity ends in my 3C curl pattern, I’ve found that winter calls for extra hair care focus. I often noticed that neglecting moisture during these colder months leads to dryness and breakage, especially at the ends, which can slow growth and cause frustration. Through my experience, trimming has been essential—not only to shed damaged ends but also to maintain length. I’ve learned that trimming doesn’t stunt growth; instead, it promotes healthier hair by preventing split ends from traveling up the strand. This aligns with my goal of reaching waist-length hair. In addition to trims, moisturizing is key. I use light but effective hydrating products that penetrate without weighing my hair down. Because my roots are low porosity, they don’t absorb moisture quickly, so I use gentle heat during deep conditioning sessions to open my cuticles. For my ends, which absorb moisture readily but lose it fast, I rely on heavier oils and butters to seal in hydration. Protective styles have been a game changer—styles like twists, braids, or buns reduce manipulation and shield my hair from harsh weather. Limiting heat styling during winter is also crucial, as heat can exacerbate dryness. What I appreciate about this approach is that it encourages intentional care and patience. Growth isn’t fast, but by prioritizing hair health with consistent trims, moisture balance, and protection, I’m confident my curls will thrive and eventually reach that waist-length goal. For anyone with a similar curl pattern or mixed porosity, I recommend embracing these winter hair rituals. It’s rewarding to see healthier, stronger strands emerge when you treat your curls with kindness and knowledge.
