... Read moreHunting season can be a challenging time for many families, especially for the partners left at home to manage everything solo. If you find yourself in the same boat, navigating the chaos of solo parenting while your significant other is away, know that you’re not alone. It’s okay to feel a mix of emotions, from pride in their hobby to a little bit of resentment when the workload doubles. From my personal experience as a mom of three, I’ve learned a few secrets on how I get through hunting season without wanting to divorce my husband! One of the biggest shifts in my mindset came from trying to embrace it. While I used to dread him leaving, I now try to look at this time away as an opportunity to bond with the boys (and my daughter, who sometimes joins him). We make it a point to do special activities like sleepovers, movie nights, or even brave a trip to see Santa Claus, despite potential meltdowns! These little traditions help turn a potentially stressful time into cherished memories. Pre-season preparation is key. Before your hunter leaves, discuss expectations for communication, essential household duties, and any special events happening. This helps set the stage and minimizes misunderstandings. During the season, establish a flexible routine that works for you and your children. Some days might be triumphs, like our successful Santa visit after an initial failed attempt, and some might be full of tears. That’s totally normal! Prioritize self-care where you can, even if it's just a quiet cup of coffee or a short walk. Another crucial aspect for us hunting wives is communicating our needs. The OCR mentioned it perfectly: if we’re happily supporting hobbies and taking care of kids while they’re gone, that same energy and appreciation needs to come back. It’s not just a given. A little recognition for the effort put in at home goes a long way. This could be a surprise spa day booked for you or simply a free day to do something you love, like Black Friday shopping without interruption. Acknowledging your hard work and showing appreciation can significantly reduce any bitterness towards hunting season. Making the most of this time away isn't just about surviving; it's about finding ways to thrive and strengthen your family bonds, even when you're flying solo.
