Book review: the naturals

The book was super cute and a fun quick read. The teenagers are funny and it was entertaining I didn’t want to put it down. Not sure if I will read the rest of the series, let me know if it’s worth it

... Read moreI recently picked up The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and as someone who loves a good YA thriller, I had to share my thoughts, especially since so many of you are asking if it's worth the hype! My initial read was a quick, fun ride, but there's definitely more to unpack. Is 'The Naturals' Good? Diving Deeper into My 5/10 Rating The book truly excels in its unique premise: a group of exceptionally talented teenagers recruited by the FBI to profile and catch serial killers. If you're a fan of shows like Criminal Minds or books like A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (as the OCR mentions, which is spot on!), you'll find this concept incredibly engaging. The characters, especially our protagonist Cassie, are intriguing, each with their own dark pasts and unique profiling skills. The "found family" trope is strong here, and I loved seeing their bonds develop amidst such grim circumstances. The love triangle added a bit of spice, keeping the romantic tension simmering. So why a 5/10? While it was entertaining and hard to put down, I felt some aspects could have been explored more deeply, and the pacing, while quick, sometimes glossed over character development in favor of plot twists. It left me wanting more depth, but certainly not bored! Navigating the Series: 'The Naturals' Reading Order If, like me, you're wondering about the rest of the series, here’s the correct reading order to fully immerse yourself in Jennifer Lynn Barnes' world: The Naturals (Book 1) Killer Instinct (Book 2) All In (Book 3) Bad Blood (Novella - often recommended between All In and *Twelve*) Twelve (Book 4) Many readers rave about how the series gets even better with each installment, delving deeper into the characters' pasts and psychological complexities. Knowing the order is key to understanding the overarching plot and character arcs! Is 'The Naturals' a Clean Read? What Parents & Readers Should Know This is a common question for YA thrillers. While The Naturals is indeed young adult fiction, it deals with mature themes. The core plot revolves around serial killers, so there are discussions of violence, murder, and psychological trauma, though not in an overly graphic or explicit way. The romance involves a love triangle, but it's generally clean with no explicit content. Language is mild. Overall, it's suitable for its target YA audience (typically 14+), but parents and sensitive readers should be aware of the dark subject matter. Beyond 'The Naturals': Discovering Jennifer Lynn Barnes' Other Works Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a prolific author, and if you enjoy her writing style and knack for intricate plots, you absolutely must check out her other books! Her most famous series is The Inheritance Games, which is a thrilling mystery series with puzzles, riddles, and a captivating cast. Many fans of The Naturals also adore The Inheritance Games for its similar blend of mystery, intrigue, and engaging characters. She has several other standalone novels and series that are also worth exploring if you're looking for more YA reads with a clever twist. The Aesthetics: Book Cover & Visuals The book cover for The Naturals is quite striking and perfectly captures the mystery and tension within. The dark, somewhat shadowy aesthetic, often featuring a lone figure or symbolic elements, gives off strong thriller vibes. It's the kind of cover that makes you want to pick it up and instantly wonder what secrets lie within. I've also seen some incredible fan art for The Naturals and Jennifer Lynn Barnes' other works online. It's clear her stories inspire a lot of creativity, which speaks to the strong visual imagery and compelling characters she creates. The cover itself, often in deep blues or purples with stark white lettering, really stands out on a bookshelf and hints at the psychological depth of the story.
