As I continue my doctoral journey, my dissertation research will examine barriers to mental health care access for justice-involved youth from the perspectives of juvenile probation officers.
Research shows that many youth involved in the juvenile justice system face significant mental health challenges, yet access to services remains inconsistent. My goal is to better understand the barriers that impact service access and identify opportunities to improve outcomes for these vulnerable youth.
This research is deeply personal to me. I am currently 8 months pregnant, working full-time, pursuing my doctorate full-time, and raising two children at home. Knowing the demands that lie ahead, I am trying to start building connections and laying the groundwork for my research early so that I can stay on track and avoid delays in completing my degree.
As I move forward, I am hoping to connect with juvenile probation officers, mental health professionals, juvenile justice practitioners, researchers, advocates, and policymakers who have experience working with justice-involved youth. As I prepare to delve deeper into the complexities of mental health care access for justice-involved youth, I recognize the multifaceted barriers these young individuals face. From my perspective, one critical challenge is the systemic fragmentation between juvenile justice and behavioral health services. In many regions, the disconnect between probation officers and mental health providers results in delays or gaps in care coordination, further exacerbating youths' mental health struggles. In my experience working and studying simultaneously while managing family responsibilities, I’ve come to appreciate the urgent need for integrated approaches. Juvenile probation officers often serve as the primary points of contact for these youth, yet they may lack sufficient training or resources to effectively identify and address mental health needs. Strengthening cross-sector collaboration and providing targeted training could significantly improve outcomes. Additionally, stigma surrounding mental health within the juvenile justice system can hinder youths' willingness to engage with services. Creating safe, nonjudgmental environments where justice-involved youth feel heard and supported is paramount. Community-based alternatives and peer support groups have shown promise in bridging these divides, offering more holistic support beyond traditional court settings. Policy improvements are equally vital. Advocating for funding that prioritizes mental health screening and intervention in juvenile probation settings can create systemic change. In my ongoing research, I aim to gather insights from professionals across disciplines to identify practical solutions grounded in real-world experiences.
