... Read moreAs a fellow book lover, I totally get the struggle: more books coming in than I can possibly read, and suddenly my once-neat bookshelf turns into a mountain of literary chaos! I recently tackled my own black cube shelf, transforming it from a 'before' state of overflowing piles to an 'after' picture of organized bliss, and I want to share my best tips with you.
First things first: you have to embrace the mess before it gets better. Take everything off your bookshelf. Yes, every single book, every trinket, every dust bunny. This is your chance to really see what you have and what you want to keep. I like to lay everything out on the floor or a table, even if it looks like a tornado just hit. It's a crucial step in understanding your collection.
Next, the sorting! This is where the magic happens. I usually create a few piles:
Keepers: These are your absolute favorites, books you plan to reread, or new ones you're genuinely excited about.
To Read Soon: Books you haven't gotten to yet but definitely want to dive into in the near future.
Donate/Sell/Gift: Books you've read and didn't love, or those you know you won't pick up again. Be honest with yourself! This step is key to decluttering and making space for new treasures.
Now, for the actual organization. There are so many ways to arrange your books, and it really depends on what works for you. I personally love organizing series and author books together – it just makes sense to keep them as a set. Other popular methods include:
By Genre: Keep all your fantasy novels together, your thrillers, your non-fiction, etc. This makes it easy to find what you're in the mood for.
Alphabetical by Author: A classic librarian's choice, great for larger collections.
By Size: Grouping books of similar height can create a very clean, uniform look, especially on a cube shelf.
By Color: If aesthetics are your top priority, this can create a stunning visual impact, though it might make finding a specific book a bit harder.
Once you have your sorting method, give your empty black bookshelf a good wipe down. Dust can accumulate quickly! Then, start placing your 'keepers' back. I like to mix it up by standing some books vertically and stacking others horizontally. This adds visual interest and can also serve as a mini-shelf for smaller items. Don't forget to incorporate some decorative elements – a small plant, a framed photo, or a pretty bookend can really elevate the look of your display. Remember that organizing your bookshelf doesn't just make it look good; it makes finding your next read a joy and gives your beloved books the beautiful home they deserve!
