What’s inside my toddler’s swim bag 🏊🏼♀️✨
We’ve recently started swim classes with my 2.5 year old and oh boy let me tell you I wish I started these classes A LOT sooner! I’ve always heard about baby/toddler safety swim classes but didn’t think it was necessary at the time (nor were we financially ready).
Now that summer is around the corner, we have plans to be in the pool and head to the the river in the next coming months so it was finally time to enroll my daughter in a swim class.
We had a lot of tears the first couple classes so fingers crossed the next ones go a little better. 🥲

Starting swim lessons with a toddler is an adventure, and believe me, a well-packed swim bag can make all the difference between a smooth outing and a chaotic one! Beyond just having the essentials, it's about making sure everything is practical and easy to access. It took us a few tries (and a few tears!) to figure out our perfect system, but I'm so glad we did. First off, let's talk about the bag itself. I absolutely love my mesh tote from the Target dollar section – it’s a total game-changer! The mesh design means air circulates, so things don't get super mildewy, and it's easy to spot what you need without rummaging. Plus, it’s surprisingly roomy for all those toddler necessities and holds up really well despite frequent use. Inside, the unsung heroes are definitely the towels. We use 2-pack travel-size towels, and they're perfect. They're absorbent enough for a little one, but they don't take up half the bag like a giant beach towel would. This leaves more space for other important items, and they dry quickly once we get home. Organization is key, especially with a toddler who has zero patience after a fun swim. I swear by clear pouches! My 'BABY THINGS' keychain pouch is fantastic for keeping a change of clothes – often a fresh outfit, a clean diaper (or two!), and maybe some spare underwear – all together and visible. No more rummaging through the bag with one hand while trying to hold a squirming toddler with the other! Snacks and hydration are non-negotiable. Toddlers burn a lot of energy swimming, so refueling quickly helps prevent meltdowns. A fruit pouch, some peanut butter sandwich crackers, and a dedicated water bottle are always in our bag. I also learned to pack a small, easy-to-eat snack for myself because getting them ready often involves me forgetting my own needs! And for those wet, soggy swimsuits and towels, a waterproof bag for wet clothes is an absolute lifesaver. It keeps everything else in the bag dry and prevents that dreaded wet-bag smell from permeating everything. You can find these relatively cheap, and they're worth every penny for the peace of mind they offer. Thinking beyond just the immediate swim, I also learned to pack a few extra things that have made a huge difference. Sunscreen is essential, especially if you're transitioning from indoor lessons to outdoor pool days – I keep a travel-size stick in our bag. A pair of goggles, even if they're just for play or to wear on their head, can sometimes encourage a reluctant swimmer or make bath time more fun later. And a small, familiar toy or book for post-swim distraction while I'm getting things organized has saved us from many a poolside tantrum. Finally, a quick tip for the 'tears' phase, which we definitely experienced: come prepared with a positive attitude, acknowledge their feelings, and have a small reward or a fun post-swim activity planned. Sometimes, just knowing they get to watch their favorite show or have a special snack after swim class helps them push through. Every swim journey is different, but with a well-packed bag and a little patience, you'll be enjoying those water days in no time!
