As a small business owner in the beauty industry, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the importance of community and representation. Being a salon owner and beauty supply store owner isn’t just a job for me; it’s a way to uplift and empower Black women, offering them a safe space to not only enhance their beauty but also share their stories and challenges. Inspired by trailblazers like Madam C.J. Walker, who paved the way for Black entrepreneurs in beauty, I feel a profound connection to my heritage and the community that supports me. As an immigrant, my journey was challenging, but the support and legacy of African Americans helped make this dream a reality. Owning both a private salon and a beauty supply store allows me to provide personalized services and quality products that cater specifically to the needs of Black hair and skin. It also means I can mentor others interested in entrepreneurship and hairstyling, passing on the legacy of empowerment and cultural pride. During Black History Month, it’s essential to recognize and celebrate not only historical figures but also current Black business owners who continue to inspire and shape the future. Small businesses like mine thrive because of the community’s dedication, and in return, we strive to give back and create opportunities for others. Supporting Black-owned businesses means supporting a cycle of growth, empowerment, and community pride.
