How I Avoid Nose Blindness!! 🌿🫧
Let’s talk about getting nose-blind to your own home 😅👃
You know when you walk in after being gone for a bit and suddenly notice a smell you swear wasn’t there before? That’s because our brains get used to the scents we’re around every day like pets, cooking, laundry, trash, etc. 🤢
Here are the things I do to keep my home smelling fresh and avoid going nose-blind:
✨ 1. Step outside for a few minutes
Seriously, even 5–10 minutes resets your nose. When you walk back in, you’ll notice anything that needs attention.
🧺 2. Remove the source, don’t mask it
Candles are great, but they won’t fix the trash, pet bedding, or that towel that’s been sitting damp for way too long. Tackling the actual cause makes the biggest difference! Wash any soft surfaces like bedding, pillows, throws that may be sat on by pets or gather smells.
🌿 3. Use simmer pots or diffusers
I love natural scents! For the holidays I like pine, cedar, cloves, rosemary, lemon. They just make the house feel cleaner without being overwhelming.
🧽 4. Hit the “forgotten” spots
The garbage disposal, dishwasher filter, washing machine gasket, litter boxes, entry mats, even the inside of your trash can… these hide so many smells.
Nose blindness happens when you become so accustomed to common household smells that you stop noticing them, even when they're strong to a first-time visitor. This is a common experience because our brain filters out constant background scents to avoid sensory overload. To counter this, stepping outside for 5 to 10 minutes is an effective way to reset your sense of smell. After a short break, your nose becomes sensitive again, allowing you to detect odors that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. It’s also important to tackle the source of unpleasant odors instead of just masking them. Regularly removing trash, washing pet bedding, and laundering towels or soft surfaces that trap smells can make a huge difference. Candles and air fresheners may add a pleasant scent but won’t eliminate underlying odors. Using natural simmer pots or diffusers with scents like pine, cedar, rosemary, and cloves is a great way to maintain a fresh and clean aroma without overwhelming your senses. Natural scents tend to be more subtle and inviting, helping your home feel cozy and welcoming. Additionally, don’t forget those hidden areas where odors commonly accumulate. Garbage disposals, dishwasher filters, washing machine gaskets, litter boxes, entry mats, and the inside of trash cans are notorious for harboring bad smells. Regularly cleaning these spots prevents odors from building up and becoming persistent. By combining these simple practices, you can maintain an odor-free home environment and avoid the discomfort of nose blindness. Your house will not only smell cleaner but also feel more refreshing to both you and your guests. Keeping your living space smelling fresh doesn’t have to be a constant struggle—it’s about being mindful and proactive about common sources of odors.

What if you can’t have candles in your home because you are on oxygen? Any suggestions?
