Caring for my going out tops is a something I take seriously because these pieces are often delicate, special, and worth the extra effort ✨
Here’s how I keep them looking fresh:
I usually hand-wash tops made of silk, lace, or embellished fabrics, using a gentle detergent and cold water to prevent shrinkage or damage. For items that can go in the machine, I turn them inside out and place them in a mesh laundry bag!! This keeps any sequins, beads, or delicate straps safe. 🪩
Drying is just as important: I lay tops flat on a clean towel, most of the time I will reshape them carefully, and avoid the dryer entirely because heat can ruin some fabrics and cause stretching. If they don’t need to be reshaped or aren’t a fragile fabric, I will still hang dry!! 👚
I also will only steam the items that get wrinkly, never iron. These little habits keep my favorite pieces looking polished, luxurious, and ready for the next night out 💫

Especially for our cherished going out tops, getting this step right is crucial to keep them looking fabulous. I've learned that simply washing isn't enough; how you dry and reshape can make all the difference in preventing stretched-out necklines or distorted hems.
When I wash my delicate pieces, especially those made from satin or lace, I always have reshaping in mind. After a gentle hand wash or a machine wash in a mesh bag, the fabric is wet and pliable, making it the perfect time to restore its original silhouette.
My Go-To Reshaping Method: Laying Flat
For most of my fragile going out tops, laying flat is the absolute best way to reshape. Here’s my process:
Prep Your Surface: I grab a clean, dry towel (or even a couple for larger items) and lay it flat on a clean, dust-free surface – a bed, a table, or a drying rack works great.
Gentle Placement: Carefully lift your wet top, supporting its weight evenly to avoid stretching, and place it on the towel.
Mold and Restore: This is where the magic happens! Gently smooth out the fabric. I start from the center and work my way outwards, lightly pulling and pressing the fabric back into its original shape. Pay special attention to the shoulders, neckline, and cuffs. If it had a specific dart or seam, I try to gently align it.
Absorb Excess Water: The towel will absorb a lot of the moisture, speeding up the drying process and preventing water marks. I might even blot it gently with another dry towel.
Flip and Repeat: After several hours, or once the top is partially dry, I carefully flip it over onto a fresh, dry section of the towel or a new towel altogether to ensure even drying and prevent mildew.
When I Hang Dry (and how to reshape while doing it):
Sometimes, for slightly less delicate fabrics or tops that need to retain their length, I opt for hang drying. But even then, there's a reshaping trick!
Choose the Right Hanger: Never use a wire hanger! They can cause shoulder bumps. I use padded hangers or even a plastic hanger that supports the garment's natural shoulder line.
Strategic Hanging: For tops that might stretch, I sometimes fold them over the center of the hanger instead of hanging by the shoulders, especially if they are heavier when wet. This prevents the fabric from pulling downwards.
Smooth as it Dries: As it hangs, periodically check and gently smooth out any wrinkles or areas that seem to be pulling out of shape. The weight of the water can cause distortion, so a quick pat or adjustment can make a big difference.
Why Avoid the Dryer?
I can't stress this enough: never put your going out tops in the dryer! High heat is the enemy of delicate fabrics. It can cause shrinkage, damage embellishments, and permanently set wrinkles. Plus, it makes successful reshaping much harder, as the fibers become rigid.
Finally, once my tops are completely dry, if there are any lingering creases, I always reach for my steamer. Steaming is a fantastic way to gently release wrinkles without the harsh pressure or heat of an iron, which can flatten delicate textures or stretch fabrics. It helps maintain the garment's shape beautifully. By incorporating these reshaping techniques into your laundry routine, you'll extend the life and beauty of your favorite going out tops, keeping them ready for every sparkle and dance floor! ✨
