Got the girls their own KŌNANE game ☺️

For those who don’t know, Kōnane is a traditional Hawaiian strategy board game that is similar to checkers. Pieces used to play are black/white stones or ʻiliʻili. This game is played on a grid, with the goal of being the last player to make a move. All moves are mandatory captures made horizontally or vertically, not diagonally.

I love having this game in our home 😍

... Read moreI recently introduced Kōnane to my family, and it has quickly become a favorite pastime in our home. What I love most about this ancient Hawaiian game is its simplicity combined with deep strategic potential. The game uses black and white stones, much like checkers pieces, which are placed on a grid. Unlike checkers, all moves in Kōnane are mandatory captures and can only be made horizontally or vertically—not diagonally. This unique movement rule really changes how you plan your plays. Playing Kōnane encourages patience and strategic thinking. Since you must make a jump each turn and can’t skip captures, the game keeps you engaged as you anticipate your opponent’s moves. It reminded me of other traditional games where foresight is key—there’s a real thrill in setting up multiple jumps or forcing your opponent into a corner. We also appreciate how Kōnane connects us to Hawaiian culture in a fun and interactive way. It’s a beautiful way to honor traditions while creating new memories. I would recommend trying this game if you enjoy classic strategy board games or if you’re looking to learn something unique. Setting it up is easy, and the game can be played on any flat surface with simple black and white stones or tokens. Overall, Kōnane offers a refreshing challenge that combines culture, strategy, and family fun. Whether you’re a seasoned board game enthusiast or a beginner, this game provides a rewarding experience with every play.
