Baby Shower 🍼🩵👶🏾
Baby showers are a wonderful way to celebrate new life with family and friends. These are some of the things my husband and I chose to do which may be different from what’s ‘trending’ at the moment.
🤎 Church Venue:
- We chose to pour back into our church by choosing it as our location. It was a financially wise choice, but it was even more important to us that our family and friends understood our commitment to our faith.
🍼 Co-ed Celebration:
- My husband and I are partners in life is who are preparing to be parents for life. Our village is made up of people that we both love dearly, and we pray our son comes to know and love too. We discussed the importance of showing up as a couple - some of our guests have never been to a baby shower, or have never seen a committed black married couple. Representations matters.
🤎 Ask and You Shall Receive: (maybe)
- One of my sister in laws played a major role in how this celebration turned out. She’s been so kind and generous in many ways. She paid for most of the decorations, helped set up the majority of the venue, MC’d and even gifted our baby boy some beautiful items. Her care was a HUGE BLESSING!! On the flip side, I had some family members who made the special day about themselves, and deliberately cause my husband and I undue stress and anxiety the day before the event. Their actions were a reminder to focus on God first - I can’t control how they react to me, but as a Christian it’s important to lead with love. I’ve forgiven but not forgotten.
🍼 Be a Gracious Host:
- We focused on being with our family and friends. The event was only scheduled for 3 hours, and we had guests who drove for 14hrs, flew from different states, and even brought their little ones. Needless to say time with them was precious. We chose not to play the typical baby shower games, and only opened up 5 gifts in front of everyone. I poured more time into creating small activity stations such as card games, writing encouraging notes, and funny jokes on diapers. Our largest expense was on food - specifically our Chick-fil-A order which turned out to be a great hit.
🤎 Count Your Blessings:
- We were blessed to receive most of our gifts on our Babylist registry. This site was great because it recommended products, was very organized, and I got to choose the ‘second hand’ feature for some of my choices. I am well aware that everything is expensive nowadays, so every gift was a precious reminder of how much we are loved and cared for. We are so grateful to God for the amazing village around us - He is so good to us.

Planning a baby shower that truly reflects your values and relationships can be so rewarding. We decided to host our celebration at our church, not only because it was budget-friendly, but because it symbolized the foundation of our family’s faith. Involving our loved ones in a space that holds meaning made the day even more special. One decision that felt important was having a co-ed baby shower. Having both men and women present highlighted the partnership my husband and I share in preparing for parenthood. This inclusive approach also challenged some guests’ expectations and showcased healthy, committed relationships within our community, emphasizing representation. In terms of activities, instead of the traditional baby shower games, which can sometimes feel repetitive or uncomfortable, we created small stations where guests could write encouraging notes and add funny messages on diapers. These personal touches brought smiles and created lasting memories. Food is always a highlight, and ordering from Chick-fil-A was a hit. It was practical and delicious, allowing us to focus more on connecting with our guests rather than coordinating complicated catering. We relied on Babylist for our registry, appreciating the feature that allowed us to include second-hand items. This choice reflects a conscious effort to be environmentally thoughtful and practical amid rising costs. Every gift was a tangible reminder of the rich support system around us. Throughout the process, keeping God at the center helped us navigate challenges, including stressful family dynamics. Forgiveness and love remained our guiding lights. Overall, blending faith, family, and thoughtful planning made our baby shower a memorable celebration of life and love. I hope sharing our journey inspires you to craft a celebration that feels authentic and filled with gratitude.
