TAKE A WALK IN MY GARDEN WITH ME
Last year was my first time starting a garden. I had bought a couple of starters at the store and planted them in my back yard. I had a few in containers but the rest were in my garden bed. I two different tomatoes, lemon cucumber, regular cucumber, spaghetti squash, watermelon, pumpkin, and strawberries. Yes I went a little overboard for my first time! But a couple of lessons I learned were:
1. Don’t plant squash and watermelon near each other….you end up with a watermelon on the outside and a squash on the inside haha!
2. Don’t plant Pumpkin too soon. I planted mine around April and it was overwhelming by fall. It’s best to plant pumpkins between June-July, depending on your area.
3. Marigolds are an amazing companion plant! It’s helps deter pest for a majority of vegetables which removes the need for pesticides.
4. Tomatillos like to be planted with a buddy. Tomato plants don’t need another plant to produce, just walk by and give them a little tap, bees don’t pollinate them like other vegetables. Tomatillos though need a companion to be able to pollinate.
5. Lastly (for now), never water succulents from top! Always water at the soil. Their petals are made of water, so if they get wet and then are touched by the sun, it can burn them and kill them.
I love having a garden! And every year I try to plant something new along with something already tried.
Do you have a garden? What are some things you’ve learned from having a garden?

Starting a garden can be an overwhelming yet rewarding experience for beginners. From choosing the right plants to understanding their needs, there's much to consider. One key lesson is to carefully plan the layout, as certain plants can negatively affect each other's growth. Companion planting, where certain plants benefit from being near each other, like marigolds with vegetables, can enhance overall productivity and deter pests naturally. Also, be mindful of planting times; certain crops, like pumpkins, have specific seasons for optimal growth. For hands-on gardeners, keeping track of watering techniques is crucial too. Watering succulents by the soil ensures they thrive without risking leaf burn. Finally, engaging with the gardening community, whether through social media or local clubs, can provide invaluable insights and support. Sharing experiences and challenges with fellow gardeners can motivate and enrich your gardening journey. So, whether you're considering starting a garden or looking to share your journey, there are endless resources and knowledge to explore in the vibrant world of gardening!
