Luggage 🔗’ed in my 🔗🌲

I still get shivers thinking about that day. What started as a regular shopping trip turned into a terrifying brush with danger. I was leaving the mall, juggling my bags – including a new item I was so excited about, maybe even a beautiful VERSACE scarf I'd splurged on – and heading towards the multi-story parking garage. It was getting late, and the garage was quieter than usual. I remember fumbling with my car keys, probably distracted by a notification on my phone, and then it happened. As I approached my car, a dark sedan with tinted windows was idling a few spots away. I didn't think much of it at first. I got to my car, put my luggage down to open the trunk, and that's when I felt a sudden, strong pull on my arm from behind. My heart leaped into my throat. Instinctively, I screamed – not just a little yelp, but a full-blown, ear-splitting shriek. I dropped everything, including my precious luggage, and struggled against the grip. The person, a shadowy figure, seemed startled by my scream and the sudden drop of my heavy bag, which must have made a loud clatter on the concrete floor. In that split second of hesitation from them, I managed to yank my arm free and bolt towards the nearest exit, still screaming. I didn't look back until I was safely out of the garage and in a more populated area. It was a horrifying experience that made me realize how quickly things can change and how important it is to always be prepared. That day taught me some crucial lessons about what to do if you ever find yourself in a similar unthinkable situation. Here’s what I learned, and what I hope can help you stay safe: Situational Awareness is Key: This is number one! I was distracted. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in isolated areas like parking lots, public transport stations, or late at night. Keep your head up, not buried in your phone. Look for anything that seems out of place – an idling car, someone loitering, or even unusual car settings like the 'parking climate' being on in an empty car. Trust your gut feeling; if something feels off, it probably is. Make Noise and Draw Attention: My scream was my biggest defense. Don't be afraid to make as much noise as possible. Yell “Help!” or “Fire!” – something that will grab immediate attention. Most attackers want discretion, and drawing attention is the last thing they want. Resist and Fight Back if You Can: While every situation is different, if someone physically grabs you, fight back with everything you've got. Kick, punch, bite, scratch. Aim for vulnerable areas like the eyes, throat, or groin. The goal is to create enough of a struggle to give you a chance to escape, even for a few seconds. Have a Personal Safety Plan: Always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. Share your live location with a trusted friend or family member if you're going somewhere alone. Have emergency contacts programmed for quick dialing. Consider carrying a personal safety alarm, especially if you often walk alone or through quiet areas. Be Mindful of Your Belongings: While my valuable item might have initially been a distraction or target, it's also a reminder to be discreet with luxury items. Don't flash expensive belongings that might make you an obvious target. Keep important documents and money secure and out of sight. My luggage became a literal stumbling block for my attacker, but it could have been worse. After the Incident: If you manage to escape, get to a safe place immediately and call the authorities. Report everything you remember, no matter how small. Seek support from friends, family, or professionals to help you process the trauma. This experience changed my perspective on personal safety. I hope my story, as terrifying as it was, can serve as a vital reminder for all of us to stay vigilant and empower ourselves with knowledge to face the unexpected. Stay safe out there!
