Get back into art with me pt.2

Hey everyone! I'm so excited to dive deeper into my recent art journey, especially with these two fun pieces I've been working on. You might have seen a sneak peek, but I wanted to share more about the inspiration and process behind my latest Hello Kitty KAWS inspired creations. Getting back into art has been incredibly therapeutic, and these pop culture mashups have been my favorite way to express myself! First up is my playful take on the 'JAWS' theme featuring our beloved Hello Kitty. I've always been drawn to unexpected crossovers, and the image of Hello Kitty, so sweet and innocent, swimming above a formidable shark with its mouth open, under the iconic red 'JAWS' logo, just clicked with me. It was about creating a sense of whimsical irony. Painting this on canvas, I focused on vibrant blues for the water to make Hello Kitty really pop, and getting the shark's menacing silhouette right was a fun challenge. I remember spending a good amount of time blending the blues to give the water a realistic yet cartoonish depth. It's truly a Hello Kitty x KAWS drawing in spirit, bringing together different worlds into one art piece. Then there's my KAWS-style character piece. I'm a huge admirer of KAWS's distinct artistic vocabulary, and I wanted to pay homage to that. My rendition features a KAWS-style character with its characteristic head and body, sitting on a bright red box, with its hands covering its face – a gesture that felt both vulnerable and iconic. The contrast of the light-colored head and dark body, paired with a blue shirt and yellow shorts, was a deliberate choice to make the character visually striking. And of course, no KAWS-inspired piece would be complete without that signature red 'KAWS' text, boldly placed at the top of the canvas painting. I also added a little yellow money bag beside the character, a subtle nod to the commercial and collectible aspect often associated with KAWS art. The process of getting the proportions right for this KAWS-style character, especially the head and the x-ed out eyes (though here covered), was really engaging. Both of these canvas paintings were created using acrylics, which I find incredibly versatile. From the initial sketch to the final layers of color and detail, each stroke was a step in bringing these ideas to life.
