Why do people feel so entitled?

2025/11/3 Edited to

... Read moreYou know, I've been thinking a lot about this question lately: 'Why do people feel so entitled?' It’s something that pops into my head whenever I encounter someone who just seems to expect everything to go their way, or that rules don’t apply to them. It’s like they have this unshakeable belief that they're inherently more deserving than others, and honestly, it can be really baffling and frustrating to witness. I started wondering, what actually causes this 'sense of entitlement'? Is it something learned, or are some people just born with it? From what I've observed and read, it seems to stem from a few different places. Sometimes, it begins in childhood – maybe parents over-indulged them, never let them experience failure, or constantly told them they were special without teaching them responsibility. This can create an environment where a person grows up thinking the world owes them something. They might not have developed the resilience or empathy needed to understand that others have needs and rights too. Then there are situations where people develop this feeling later in life. Perhaps they've achieved a certain level of success, power, or wealth, and that success goes to their head. They start to believe their achievements make them superior and exempt from common courtesies or regulations. I’ve seen this in workplaces, where a high-achieving colleague might start to treat junior staff disrespectfully, assuming their position grants them permission to do so. It’s a sad shift to witness. Another angle is insecurity. Believe it or not, sometimes a deep-seated insecurity can manifest as entitlement. If someone feels inadequate or undervalued, they might overcompensate by demanding special treatment or asserting their superiority, just to feel better about themselves. It's a defense mechanism, albeit a rather unhealthy one, to protect their fragile ego. They might feel like if they don't demand it, they won't get it, or that they aren't 'enough' without special privileges. So, when we talk about 'people who feel entitled,' we're often talking about individuals who might not even realize the impact of their behavior. They could be genuinely oblivious to how their actions affect others, or they might simply lack the empathy to care. I find it challenging, but understanding these potential root causes helps me approach the situation with a bit more perspective, rather than just immediate frustration. What do you all think? Have you noticed this 'feeling entitled' trend? How do you usually react when you encounter someone with a strong sense of entitlement? I'm always looking for ways to navigate these interactions gracefully, without letting it completely derail my day or energy. It's definitely a topic that makes you pause and reflect on human behavior.
