1. Black Twitter: A People's History, 2024
⭐️10/10
– Loved this summary of the way accountability online (and the global ripples of movements in the hashtag era) are honed in the last decade or so. Black Twitter, Instagram lives, and Tiktok have changed so much so fast, I think it benefits us to take a moment and focus on the forest AND the trees.
As a mayo-sapian I have been on the outskirts of this whole phenomenon but learning every day how to show up as someone who wants to keep moving forward, and feel like the alchemy of processing grief and humor and feeling connected have been such a significant part of history and culture in my lifetime. Also no surprise that twitter and tiktok are being systemically squashed because of how important these community-building tools have become! Yet the end was hopeful and reassuring! The guests/interviews were top notch. I'm excited to do more digging after watching it.
2. Under the Bridge, 2024
⭐ ️8.0/10
– When Reena was a toddler her and her family moved in next door. Her and her family became like family so much that if you visited my grandparents in Saskatchewan you could see pics of Reena there.
I gave 8 stars because there were certain aspects I didn't like. I wish they had kept the location much smiliar to what it truly is. The series portrayed it as remote and with no one around in any direction. If you google the Craigflower Bridge in Saanich you will see it's surrounded in 2 directions with lots of people as well as the traffic. When you see how populated the area is it makes it even more shocking that no one heard or saw anything.
The other issue I has was on the portrayal of Manjit. He is a soft spoken man but they portray him more like a pushover and someone who can't speak for himself or his family whon he showed in all interviews that is far from the truth.
3. Shogun, 2024
⭐️10/10
– I can't recommend Shogun enough! This is one of those rare shows that's a must watch.
It takes place in Japan during the 1600' where Lord Yoshii Torango is turned on by Council of Regents and they try to kill him and his people. Then he finds a mysterious European ship marooned with its crew in a nearby village and everything changes from what he finds on it. This series has the look and feel of a blockbuster movie. Its world building, character development and attention to detail is as good as anything you'll see in tv. FX usually does a great job with its shows and Shogun is no different. I'll be shocked if this isn't nominated for several awards.
4. Fargo, 2014-2024
⭐️9.0/10
– What can I say about Fargo that hasn't already been said? It's just an incredible series.
Everyone has their own favorite season for some reason because they're all amazing. The weak link is easily season four but even that one is still pretty good, as long as you don't compare it to the first three seasons. This is an anthology series that was inspired by the 1996 film where each season follows a new murder story in some Midwest town with a different cast every season. It has the same feel, style, dark humor, unpredictability, etc as the film did. It has the feel of the Coen brothers but creator Noah Hawley definitely puts his own stamp on it. They're making Season 5 now so I'm definitely looking forward to watching that one too.
5. The Bear, 2022
⭐️10/10
– This show was great. It is NOT and I repeat not a comedy. Unless people like laughing at screaming, stressed out, sad, overworked chefs and restaurant workers. A few times I wanted to kill cousin, he was just off the rails and making decisions like a toddler then I realized he's sad, sad with things that have happened, his fractured family and generally with his life. He grew on me. Lip(he'll always be Lip to me) had his own hurtles, some he jumped with grace and others he stumbled into head first. But his heart, courage and tenacity never wavered. I'm not even sure why they'd call it a comedy. I sure do hope there's another season though because I really want to see where this goes. Loved the whole cast!
