Snapping Turtle

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit about my recent encounters with snapping turtles here in Michigan. Living in the Great Lakes State, you're bound to cross paths with all sorts of wildlife, and these ancient reptiles are definitely among the most fascinating – and sometimes, a little intimidating! Understanding Michigan's Snapping Turtles The snapping turtles we typically see in Michigan are the Common Snapping Turtle (*Chelydra serpentina*). They're pretty unmistakable with their rugged, prehistoric looks, powerful jaws, and long, thick tails. They play a really important role in our wetland ecosystems, acting as scavengers and helping to keep things balanced. I've heard stories about how big they can get, and let me tell you, when you see one up close, you definitely get a sense of their strength! The 'Snapping Turtle Season' in Michigan While snapping turtles are active throughout the warmer months, what people often refer to as 'snapping turtle season' usually peaks in late spring and early summer, typically May through July. This is when the females leave their aquatic homes to find suitable spots on land to lay their eggs. You'll often see them crossing roads, especially after a rain, looking for sandy or soft soil to nest. This is probably the most common time I've personally encountered them away from water. It's a critical time for their reproduction, so it's extra important to be mindful if you're out driving or hiking near ponds, lakes, or slow-moving rivers. Where I've Spotted Them (and Where You Might Too!) From my own observations, these turtles love calm, shallow waters with plenty of vegetation – think marshy areas, ponds, slow-moving rivers, and even ditches. I've often seen them basking just below the surface with only their eyes and nostrils visible, or sometimes a whole head poking out. One time, I was kayaking on a quiet lake near Ann Arbor and saw a huge one glide right past my boat – it was an incredible sight! They're surprisingly well-camouflaged, so you really have to keep your eyes peeled. Safety Tips for Encounters Given their powerful bite, it’s really important to know how to safely interact with snapping turtles, or more accurately, how not to interact with them! Give them Space: This is the golden rule. If you see one on land, especially crossing a road, give it a wide berth. They're just trying to get somewhere. Never Pick Them Up: Their necks are surprisingly long and flexible. Trying to pick one up is asking for a serious bite. Even if you think you know how, it's best to leave it to professionals if it's in immediate danger (like stranded in a busy road). Observe from a Distance: Grab your camera, but use your zoom! Enjoy their presence from a safe distance without disturbing them. Road Crossings: If you see one crossing a road, and it's safe to do so, you can slow down and allow it to pass. Never try to move it unless you are trained and know exactly what you are doing, or are contacting local wildlife authorities. They almost always know where they're going. It's truly a privilege to share our Michigan landscapes with these ancient creatures.
