Meet our *newish* family members

Having recently welcomed Oreo and Orange Soda into my home, I quickly realized that guinea pigs are far more demanding than I initially imagined. These little pets require more than just occasional feeding; they need constant attention to their diet, environment, and companionship. One of the key takeaways from my experience is the importance of vitamin C in their diet. Unlike many animals, guinea pigs cannot synthesize their own vitamin C, so I make sure to include fresh bell peppers and leafy greens like lettuce every day. This not only keeps them healthy but also adds variety to their meals, which they seem to enjoy immensely. Another aspect that caught me off guard was the sheer amount of waste they produce. Their frequent pooping means daily cleaning is a must to maintain a hygienic living space. This is crucial to prevent any health issues, especially respiratory infections. Companionship turned out to be an essential factor as well. After learning that guinea pigs are social creatures, I adopted Oreo shortly after Orange Soda to keep her company. They quickly bonded, which reduced their stress levels and increased their activity. I also made their living area more enriching by adding hideouts and toys, which help keep them mentally stimulated. Watching them interact and play has been an absolute joy and has deepened my appreciation for these pets. Overall, while owning guinea pigs involves considerable effort — sometimes even more than my birds and dog combined — the love and companionship they provide make it all worthwhile.
