Monday musings: Why annotating makesbetter stories

Being a reader first changes the way you write.

You start to notice what sticks — the moments you underline, the lines you can’t let go of.

Annotating books taught me that it’s not always the perfect passages that matter most.

It’s the parts that feel real when you’re falling apart a little.

That’s what I want to write someday:

a story that gets worn out from being lived with.

✨ Here's to messy margins, highlighted heartbreak, and all the stories we carry with us longer than we meant to.

... Read moreAnnotating books significantly influences the writing process by deepening the connection between readers and texts. This practice allows readers to engage with passages that resonate on a personal level, revealing the essence of what makes a story impactful. When readers underline or make notes in the margins, they highlight not just the perfect lines, but the parts that evoke genuine emotions. This emotional engagement leads to more authentic storytelling. For aspiring writers, understanding the significance of these annotations can help in crafting narratives that linger long after the book is closed. By focusing on the moments that readers find relatable, storytellers can create work that resonates with audiences. Books like 'The Writing Life' by Annie Dillard or 'Bird by Bird' by Anne Lamott emphasize the importance of attending to emotional truths in writing. Both authors encourage readers and writers to immerse themselves in their experiences and emotions to create richer, more meaningful stories. Writers are invited to embrace the chaos of imperfect writing sessions, highlighted notes, and messy margins. This process is part of the journey towards finding one's voice. Engaging with the literary community, sharing insights through platforms like book clubs, and discussing favorite annotations can further enhance one’s writing journey. In doing so, writers not only improve their mechanics but also connect with the emotional fabric of their readership.

BookTok Hates my Annotating
Okay maybe BookTok doesn’t care. Really I don’t care either. But annotating is one of my favorite things to do as I read! I don’t like to highlight or mark up my books. I was taught from a young age not to write in books, and it’s stuck with me. Which is why annotating tabs and clear sticky not

Growing up I hated it so much because I was forced to do it in the way I didn’t want to do it. I was looking for details to prove my point in an essay or in general being graded on how insightful my ideas were. But nothing in it was fun for me because I wanted to annotate based on what I felt. What
