Made my own laundry detergent today. I was able to smash the original recipe off of passionatepennypincher.com and switched it up a little to suit us!

1/2 box Borax

4 scoops OxiClean

1 bar grated Fels Naptha bar

1box (35oz) laundry powder

1 box (2lb) baking soda

1 container (24oz) of scent beads

... Read moreYou know, ever since I started making my own laundry detergent, my whole laundry routine has changed for the better! I used to just grab whatever was on sale, but after diving into the world of DIY cleaning, I realized how much control and effectiveness I was missing out on. Seriously, if you're curious about boosting your laundry power and saving some cash, you've got to hear about the stars of my homemade recipe: borax and baking soda! When I first heard about using borax, I admit I was a little curious. Many of the queries I had, like 'What is borax and how does it work as a laundry booster?' led me down a rabbit hole of discovery. Borax, or sodium borate, is actually a natural mineral compound often found in a box. It's incredible for laundry because it helps soften hard water, which allows detergents to work more effectively. Plus, it's a fantastic stain remover and can even boost the cleaning power of your existing laundry powder. I always make sure to pick up a fresh box of borax for my mix! Then there's baking soda. Now, a common question I used to have, and I see others ask, is 'Is baking soda borax?' The simple answer is no, they're not the same, though they are both amazing for laundry! Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a gentler alkali. Its magic lies in its ability to neutralize odors and brighten whites and colors. It's like a natural deodorizer for your clothes and helps give them that extra sparkle. Together, borax and baking soda are a dynamic duo, each bringing unique benefits to the laundry tub. The real genius of this DIY laundry detergent recipe is how these ingredients work together. The borax tackles hard water and tough stains, while the baking soda refreshes and brightens. And let's not forget the other power players! I always include OxiClean, which acts as an excellent stain remover powder, especially for those stubborn spots. And grating a bar of Fels Naptha, a classic laundry soap, adds serious grease-cutting power. Of course, for that extra touch of freshness, I add some scent beads – because who doesn't love beautifully smelling laundry? These are all key components you see often on the laundry aisle, including your standard laundry powder. Beyond the fantastic cleaning results, making my own laundry detergent has been a revelation in terms of cost savings. A single box of borax or a box of baking soda lasts surprisingly long when you're mixing your own batches. It’s also incredibly satisfying to know exactly what ingredients, like specific types of laundry soap or stain remover, are going into your wash cycle, especially if you're mindful of harsh chemicals. If you're trying this for the first time, make sure your Fels Naptha laundry bar is grated very finely; it helps it dissolve better. And don't be afraid to adjust the amount of scent beads to your personal preference. You want a powerful clean, but also a pleasant smell! Honestly, I can't recommend trying this homemade laundry booster recipe enough. It's simple, effective, and truly makes a difference. My laundry feels cleaner, smells fresher, and I'm saving money – it's a win-win-win! Give it a shot; you might just find your new favorite way to do laundry.
