Things you should know before your 1st bikini prep

When I decided to embark on my first competition, I knew it would be challenging, but there were so many unexpected twists I wish I'd known beforehand. If you're an older woman considering or currently undergoing bikini prep, here's what I've learned from my own experience. One of the first things you'll discover is that you'll always be cold. Seriously! As our metabolism changes with age, and as you lean out during prep, your body's ability to regulate temperature shifts. I found myself constantly bundled up, even indoors. My tip? Invest in good quality thermals, keep warm drinks handy, and embrace cozy layers. It's not just physical; it’s a constant reminder of the intense calorie deficit you're in. Then there's the so. much. cardio. While essential, for older joints and recovery, it's crucial to be smart. I learned that listening to my body was paramount. Instead of just pounding the pavement, I incorporated more low-impact options like the stair climber (a fantastic way to build those hamstrings!) and incline walking. Focus on consistency and proper form to prevent injuries, which can take longer to heal as we age. Remember, it's about smart training, not just hard training. Another practical challenge? You'll need two wardrobes! One for your shrinking prep body, and one for your 'off-season' or regular life. Seriously, clothes will fit differently, and you'll find yourself needing smaller sizes for gym wear as you progress. And speaking of gym wear, prepare for so. much. laundry. Working out twice a day means double the sweaty clothes. My advice is to have a dedicated system for washing and drying – trust me, it saves a lot of stress! Beyond the physical, the mental battles are the most challenging. As an older woman, I faced a unique set of internal dialogues. Doubts about whether I was 'too old' for this, comparing myself to younger competitors, and the sheer discipline required tested my resolve daily. Finding a support system, whether it’s a coach, fellow competitors, or a trusted friend, is vital. Remember, not everyone will support you, and that's okay. Some friends or family might not understand why you’re pushing your body this way. Learn to accept that their reactions are about them, not you, and seek out those who celebrate your journey. Despite the hurdles, you'll learn so much. My first bikini prep taught me an incredible amount about nutrition – how my body responds to different foods, macros, and timing. I gained a deep understanding of my own body changes, not just aesthetically but also internally. This knowledge is invaluable, empowering you to make healthier choices long after the competition is over. It's a journey of self-discovery, pushing past perceived limits, and proving to yourself what you're truly capable of, no matter your age.
