Nike's CEO came up the hard way.

Nike's CEO came up the hard way.

Elliott Hill started at Nike as an intern in 1988. Over more than 30 years, he worked nearly 19 roles across sales, marketing, and global operations, learning the company from the inside.

He retired in 2020, then returned in 2024 to take over as CEO, replacing John Donahoe. Now he's pushing Nike back toward sport, athletes, and tighter wholesale relationships, with decisions shaped by decades of firsthand experience.

It's a rare example of long-term loyalty driving a leadership reset at a global brand.

Do you think companies perform better when leaders rise from within?

1/23 Edited to

... Read moreElliott Hill’s journey at Nike exemplifies the profound impact of rising through the ranks within a company. Starting as an intern in 1988, Hill immersed himself in diverse roles spanning sales, marketing, and global operations, gaining invaluable insights into every facet of the company. This extensive experience gave him a unique perspective when he took over as CEO in 2024 after a brief retirement. From my personal experience working in companies where leadership was promoted from within, I’ve observed that such leaders tend to have a deeper empathy for employees and customers alike. Leaders like Hill often understand the company culture intimately and appreciate the challenges faced at different levels of the organization. This allows them to make more informed, holistic decisions that resonate well across teams. Moreover, Hill’s approach to push Nike back toward its sporting roots and strengthen wholesale partnerships highlights his ability to leverage decades of on-the-ground knowledge. Leaders with such backgrounds often prioritize long-term brand staying power over short-term gains, aligning product strategies with core company values and customer expectations. This model of leadership transition also encourages loyalty and motivation among employees, demonstrating that dedication and internal growth can lead to the highest roles. It’s a powerful message that cultivates stability and continuity, crucial for a global brand competing in a fast-evolving market. Hill’s story may inspire other companies to consider promoting leaders from within, capitalizing on institutional knowledge and fostering a culture that rewards commitment. For Nike, this leadership style appears to be a strategic reset aimed at reinforcing their identity in the sports industry while navigating modern retail challenges effectively.
