Balance is key in Everything
#letschat about food guilt
Anyone else feel overwhelmingly guilty when they eat “unhealthy” foods? Like you could have eaten nothing but greens, lean protein, and nutrient dense food for a week but the second you have some bacon or ice cream it’s guilt city.
When I went on vacation with my boyfriend to his family house, I was already nervous about food options. the first night we had cabbage, brats, potato salad, and fruit for dessert. This is pretty on par with what I usually eat. (veg, protein, carb, and fruits) so first night I’m chilling. The next day, I’m told they’re making all these bacon wrapped things before they start on the wings and we’d have left over potato salad and cabbage with it. This is when I started getting weird. I debated for a whole hour about eating these bacon wrapped goodies. It was my boyfriend who eventually convinced me that having something more glutinous was not going to undo all my progress so far. So I ate them… and they were SO good. I was glad for awhile I didn’t miss out on the deliciousness. Then a bit later is when the guilt started to creep up.
The guilt food 👇
bacon wrapped pickles (fire but a bit salty) and bacon wrapper sausage shooters (these had cream cheese and peppers in it too and omggg when I say they were good I mean that shit)
What I realized over the weekend 👇
Although I only had two of each, it left me feeling pretty shitty about myself. I literally had no reason to feel bad. I’ve battled with my relationship with food since freshman year of high school. I have always been way too hard on myself on how much and what I eat. Usually this will cause me to restrict my eating exceptionally or binge to the point of sickness. So this is a reminder to be kind to yourself and don’t restrict your eating all the time. We really don’t have as much time on this earth as we think. Why spend it making yourself feel bad all the time, that includes with food. Like sure, we shouldn’t be eating heaps of bacon, icecream, and fries every day. But once in awhile won’t kill you (unless you have a medical condition, but I’m not you or a doctors so idk) and especially if you’re doing well all the other days; why care? In fact you deserve that feel good food. As long as you have balance thats all you can strive for. Sometimes I feel like it’s an all or nothing life. I’m here to tell you that’s just societal pressures and it’s all a facade. Even professional Athletes have a cheat day and a rest day. All restrictive dieting does is enhance the cravings and lead you down a road of self inflicted dissatisfaction. Have fun with food. Have fun with life. And don’t take it all so seriously. You’ll thank me later 😉
If you struggle with food, you are not alone and you can overcome it. You can love food and it will love you back. There are ways to modify anything in life, food is no exception. This is a safe space so feel free to open up in the comments. I’d love to cheer you on during your journey.
