This morning she had a little bit of scrambled eggs, some yogurt, and a banana with peanut butter with a cup of milk

As a parent, I know the morning rush can be real, and finding healthy breakfast ideas for a spirited 4-year-old can feel like a daily challenge! Beyond the classic scrambled eggs and fruit, I’ve discovered a few strategies that make breakfast both nutritious and exciting for my little one. It’s all about balance and a bit of creativity, ensuring they get the energy they need to play and learn! One thing I always aim for is a good mix of protein, healthy fats, and fiber to keep them full and focused until snack time. For protein, if eggs aren’t always a hit, I often turn to cottage cheese with some berries mixed in, or sometimes even a small smoothie with Greek yogurt and a scoop of kid-friendly protein powder. Another favourite in our house is whole-wheat toast with a thin layer of almond butter (check for nut allergies, of course!) and some sliced apples or banana on top. It’s surprisingly filling and packed with good nutrients! We also love making mini breakfast burritos with scrambled eggs, a sprinkle of cheese, and a tiny bit of avocado wrapped in a small whole-wheat tortilla – they’re easy for little hands to hold. When it comes to making breakfast fun, especially for those picky phases, I love using cookie cutters to shape pancakes or toast into stars or dinosaurs – it’s a simple trick that often gets a smile and encourages them to eat. We also do "breakfast boards" sometimes, with small piles of different fruits, cheese cubes, a mini whole-wheat muffin, and some hard-boiled egg slices. It gives them choices and makes it feel like an adventure, almost like a mini picnic! Sometimes, a sprinkle of cinnamon on oatmeal or a tiny bit of whipped cream on fruit can make a big difference in appeal without adding too much sugar. For busy mornings (which, let's be honest, is most mornings!), I've found batch-prepping to be a lifesaver. Overnight oats are fantastic because you can make them the night before and just grab them from the fridge. I mix rolled oats with milk (dairy or non-dairy), chia seeds, and a little maple syrup, then add fresh or frozen fruit in the morning. Another go-to is baking a batch of healthy banana or zucchini muffins on the weekend. They’re perfect for a quick grab-and-go option, paired with a piece of fruit and some milk. Even making a big batch of pancakes and freezing them, then just popping them in the toaster, can save so much time during the week. I also try to involve my 4-year-old in the process when possible. Letting them choose which fruit goes into their yogurt or helping stir batter for pancakes makes them more invested in eating what they've helped prepare. It’s a win-win! We talk about how the food gives them energy to play and learn, which helps them understand the "why." Remember, every child is different, so what works for one might not work for another. The key is offering a variety of healthy options and trying to keep meal times positive and stress-free. It's truly a journey of trial and error, but finding those few go-to meals makes all the difference for a smooth start to the day for my 4-year-old, and hopefully, for yours too!
