CLEAN EATING POSTPARTUM (day 5)

For breakfast today I had my regular protein waffles for some carbs and protein as well as my plant breakfast sausage. for those of you who are new to this food series, I usually eat MorningStar or Beyond breakfast sausage not because I am a vegetarian, but because I just like the taste of the plant sausage haha! Turkey sausage is also a great healthy breakfast meat option though if you are not a fan of the plant sausage.

For lunch I had this low-carb wrap which I put cheese, turkey pepperoni, and turkey on, and then threw it in the air fryer to toast for a few minutes. The wraps I use are called Xtreme Wellness wraps. They are pretty big and only 70 calories per wrap! I paired this with a few bites of some Halo Top ice cream (which is a lower calorie ice cream) for my breastfeeding sweet tooth 😋.

For dinner Austin was craving Chipotle which was a pretty good way for me to build a healthy meal as well. I love their chips, but I read the nutrition info on it and they are definitely not a clean food 😂 I had these black bean and quinoa chips instead from Greenwise and they were tasty too!

... Read moreOh, the postpartum sweet tooth! Can anyone else relate? After having my little one, those cravings hit differently, especially for something cool and creamy like ice cream. It's like my body was constantly asking for a little treat, probably from all the late-night feeds and general exhaustion. I remember feeling a bit guilty at first, thinking I had to be 'perfect' with my clean eating journey. But then I realized, it's all about balance and finding smart ways to satisfy those urges without completely derailing my progress. One of the biggest lessons I learned is that it's okay to indulge a little, especially when you're navigating the rollercoaster of postpartum life. The key is how you indulge. For me, discovering lower-calorie ice cream options like Halo Top was a game-changer. It allowed me to have that delicious treat without the heavy feeling or the sugar crash that comes with traditional ice creams. It’s not about deprivation; it’s about making smarter choices that still bring you joy and comfort during this intense period. When those ice cream cravings strike, I now have a few solid tricks up my sleeve. First, I always make it a point to check the nutrition labels. Look for options with less added sugar, more protein, and fewer calories per serving. There are so many amazing brands out there now, including fantastic dairy-free alternatives made from almond, oat, or coconut milk, which can be great if you're avoiding dairy for any reason, or just prefer the taste. Sometimes, I even get creative in the kitchen and blend frozen fruit (like bananas, mangoes, or berries) with a splash of milk or yogurt to make a quick, healthy 'nice cream' – it's surprisingly satisfying and packed with natural goodness! Another tip I swear by is mindful portion control. It's so easy to get carried away, especially when you're exhausted and just want comfort. I like to scoop my ice cream into a small bowl, really savoring each bite, rather than eating straight from the tub. This simple act helps me appreciate the treat more and prevents overeating. Pairing your postpartum ice cream with something wholesome can also help make it a more balanced snack. A small scoop alongside a bowl of fresh berries, a handful of nuts, or even a piece of whole-wheat toast can add fiber and nutrients, making the indulgence feel more complete. And for all my fellow breastfeeding mamas, your body is working overtime producing milk, so it's super common to feel extra hungry and crave quick energy sources like sugar. Don't beat yourself up about it! Listening to your body's signals and nourishing yourself, even with a mindful treat, is part of essential self-care during this demanding time. Just remember to hydrate well and ensure you're getting plenty of nutrient-dense foods in your main meals too. It's about enjoying the journey, embracing the changes, and finding sustainable healthy habits that support both your physical health and your mental well-being. So next time that breastfeeding ice cream craving hits, go ahead and enjoy it, mindfully and without guilt!
