I don’t know about you guys, but my baby is NOT one of those babies you see in the videos on social media who will just chill out and relax in a normal float 😂. My daughter is a busy busy girl and likes to be doing something 24/7.
I actually looked for so long for the perfect float before her first beach trip because I didn’t want to waste money on something she wouldn’t want anything to do with and I also wanted something that could let me relax a little bit too on our vacation 😅.
My daughter ended up absolutely loving this float and it kept her entertained for longer than I thought it would! After she would get tired of toys we would put rocks or leaves or something random we found on her little tray and she just put them in her toys and took them out over and over. Whatever works! 😂
We got this off Amazon and it’s the “SwimWays Baby Spring Float Splash n Play”!
... Read moreIt's totally normal to wonder if your tiny 3-month-old is ready for their first dip! When I first thought about taking my little one to the pool, I had so many questions. Is it safe? What do I need? How long can they stay in? It can feel a bit overwhelming, but with a little preparation, pool time can be a wonderful experience for both of you.
First and foremost, safety is key. For babies as young as 3 months, you'll want to ensure the water temperature is comfortably warm, around 89-92°F (32-33°C). Cold water can quickly make them shiver. Sun protection is also crucial. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can be strong. Look for a float with a good green sunshade, like the one I found, or bring a pop-up tent for shade by the pool. Always apply baby-safe sunscreen to exposed skin, and dress them in a rash guard. And, of course, never, ever leave your baby unattended, even for a second, no matter how shallow the water or how secure they seem in their float.
Before you head out, pack a dedicated 'pool bag' for your little one. Think swim diapers (regular diapers swell up and become useless in water!), a couple of soft towels, extra changes of clothes (for after), and maybe a small bottle of water or formula if they're due for a feed. Don't forget their favorite sun hat!
Now, for the fun part! While a 3-month-old won't be doing laps, they can absolutely enjoy the sensory experience of the water. My daughter, being an active infant, loved splashing and feeling the water. A good baby float, especially one with toy attachments and ample tray space like the 'SwimWays Baby Spring Float Splash n Play' I mentioned, can be a lifesaver. You can put small, water-safe toys, or even just some leaves or small rocks you find nearby (under close supervision, of course!) on the tray. My little one was endlessly fascinated with picking things up and putting them back down. The bright marine animal patterns on her float also kept her gaze.
Keep an eye on your baby for cues. A 3-month-old shouldn't stay in the pool for too long – typically 10-15 minutes at a time is plenty. Look for signs of discomfort like shivering lips, fussiness, or drowsiness. It's better to have a few short, positive experiences than one long, exhausting one. After you're done, quickly dry them off, rinse any chlorine from their skin, and moisturize if needed. A warm, cozy cuddle and a nap usually follow a successful pool adventure!
Remember, every baby is different. What works for one might not work for another. But with these tips, you can feel more confident introducing your 3-month-old to the joys of the water. It’s all about creating happy, safe memories together!
