MY BABY’S FIRST DENTIST APPOINTMENT EXPERIENCE 🦷
My daughter had her first dentist appointment recently and I wanted to share our experience with any mamas who are nervous about it or just curious!
The dentist only spent around 5 minutes with her. They brushed her teeth, looked inside her mouth to see what teeth she had in and check it out in general, and then brushed fluoride on quick!
I did have to hold her down while they put the fluoride on which was so sad because she was upset but it was very quick so not bad 😊

It's totally normal to feel a bit anxious about your little one's first dentist appointment – I know I certainly did! Many mamas wonder when the right time is, and from what I've learned, experts often recommend that first dental visit by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. It’s less about fixing problems and more about establishing a ‘dental home’ and getting proactive with preventive care. To help prepare, I tried a few things. We practiced brushing at home, making it a fun game. I also talked to my daughter about going to see the 'tooth doctor' in a positive, exciting way, though I'm not sure how much she understood! One thing I found really helpful was bringing her favorite comfort toy. When we got there, the clinic was super child-friendly, which immediately put me a little more at ease. Getting her comfortable in that bright blue dental chair felt like a small victory in itself. During the actual appointment, the dental professional was amazing at making it quick and efficient, just as the original post mentioned. They did a 'knee-to-knee' exam, which is where I sat facing the dentist, and my daughter lay with her head in the dentist's lap and her body in mine. This allowed for a good view of her mouth while keeping her close to me. They gently examined her mouth, checked for any signs of early decay or developmental issues, and counted her tiny teeth. They also demonstrated proper brushing techniques for infants, which was a great refresher for me. The fluoride application was indeed the trickiest part, as my fellow mama mentioned. I had to hold my little one still, and she definitely voiced her displeasure! It broke my heart a little to see her upset, but the dental professional reassured me it was completely normal and vital for strengthening her tooth enamel against cavities. Thankfully, it was over in a flash. Afterward, we shared some big comforting hugs, and she quickly brightened up, especially with a new sticker in hand! When looking for an infant dentist in your area, I really recommend searching specifically for a pediatric dentist. They specialize in children's oral health and are trained to handle the unique needs and anxieties of little patients. Look for a practice with a friendly atmosphere, a compassionate team, and one that encourages parents to be present during the exam. Don't be afraid to read reviews or ask other local moms for recommendations! This first appointment was a great reminder that starting early is key to healthy oral habits. Now, I feel much more confident about our ongoing dental care journey. Remember, even if there are a few tears, it's a short-term discomfort for long-term health benefits. You've got this, mamas!
