THE NITTY GRITTY ABOUT GRIEF

This past Saturday, on the 29th, we had to put our family dog to sleep. I’ve had this dog since I was 12 years old; LONG before I met my husband & had our child. Midnight meant the world to me.

He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure a while ago (unofficially 2017, officially 2022) so I knew this day was gonna come. All week, I’d been crying with my family, dreading that day. My family lives all around the world so navigating calls for all of us to be present has been crazy. In addition to crying and calling, I simply didn’t have the motivation to clean the way I normally would. Of course, it’s clean enough to not be harmful to a toddler but not clean enough to not be embarrassed. My husband has been so understanding and graceful but even in his grief, he couldn’t seem to clean either.

Grief is hard. No matter what you’re grieving. My heart is so incredibly broken right now and this is what MY heartbreak looks like. As I’m typing this, our kitchen is now clean, play area is organized, and living room is straightened but I’m still giving myself grace for mess because there’s no timeline on grief. All we can do is keep picking up the pieces and pray that as the days go on, we have less pieces to pick up.

Midnight was the bestest boy, man. #griefjourney#dogmomsoflemon8#seniordogs#giveyourselfgrace

Animals often become integral members of our families, providing companionship, joy, and unconditional love. In this difficult process of grief, it's important to acknowledge your feelings. Whether you're dealing with the loss of a senior dog or navigating the emotional landscape of pet ownership, it's normal to feel lost and overwhelmed. In moments of sorrow, reach out to your support network. Sharing memories with friends and family can help ease the pain. Reflect on the joy your pet brought into your life and consider creating a small tribute in their memory, like a photo album or a memory box. Engaging with online communities, like support groups or forums dedicated to pet loss, can also be a source of solace. Pets teach us valuable lessons about love and loyalty, and while the grief can feel heavy, it's crucial to remember that healing takes time. Allow yourself the space to grieve without judgment. Embrace the idea of giving yourself grace during this challenging time. Cherish the memories and look for ways to honor your pet, allowing their spirit to live on in your heart.
