Book Review: All About Love (Part 1)

Let me just preface this by saying I’m only halfway through the book! With that being said…

I’m only halfway through this book and my heart & mind have been hit I don’t know how many times. The one thing I always think about is how, as bell hooks said, I’ve never seen an ACTUAL definition of love. I’ve only seen descriptions of it along with what man (people) perceive it to be/what they’ve experienced it to be like. No one has actually said WHAT love is and her definition of it is etched in my heart and soul. Not only because of its accuracy but because that’s also how I’ve believed it to be. So it’s nice to know that there was another person on this earth to see it through similar lenses.

Discussing our introduction to love as children and how the interactions in love shaped us was amazing. Her view on disciplining children in love? Chef’s kiss x3.

So far, I love this book. I’ve highlighted, underlined, and bracketed so much.

... Read moreOkay, so my initial review just touched the surface of how deeply bell hooks' 'All About Love' is resonating with me. Since writing that, I've been reflecting even more on the incredible wisdom packed into this New York Times Bestseller. It's not just a book; it's a complete re-education on one of humanity's most fundamental emotions. This red cover holds so much transformative power! One of the biggest eye-openers for me was bell hooks' insistence that love isn't just a feeling, but an action – a commitment. She defines it as 'the will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth.' This isn't the romanticized, passive 'love at first sight' that movies often portray. It's active, demanding, and requires conscious effort. This definition alone has made me rethink so many of my past relationships and interactions, urging me to move beyond mere sentimentality to genuine engagement. What makes 'All About Love: New Visions' truly transformative is how she breaks down love into its core components: care, commitment, trust, responsibility, respect, and knowledge. Before reading this, I honestly hadn't consciously considered each of these elements as foundational to love. For example, 'care' isn't just about providing for someone, but about actively supporting their well-being and growth. And 'knowledge' means truly understanding who the other person is, not just who you want them to be. It’s challenging me to be more present and intentional in how I show up for people, whether it’s family, friends, or even myself. It’s about building a foundation of integrity in every loving connection. The part about our introduction to love as children, and how it shapes us, felt incredibly validating. She talks about how often, as children, we're taught control disguised as love, or how fear can be mistakenly associated with care. Her perspective on discipline, for instance, isn't about punishment but about guiding and teaching from a place of genuine care and respect for a child's spiritual growth. This has given me so much to think about regarding how I perceive discipline, both in my past and in potential future interactions – it’s a call to foster growth, not just enforce rules. It’s no wonder this book, with its iconic red cover, became a New York Times Bestseller. It's because bell hooks doesn't just theorize; she makes these complex ideas accessible and deeply personal. She encourages self-love as a prerequisite for loving others authentically, which is a message I think many of us desperately need to hear. It’s not an easy read in the sense that it forces you to confront uncomfortable truths, but it’s an incredibly rewarding one, offering practical wisdom for navigating the complexities of human connection. If you're looking for a book that will challenge your preconceived notions about love and equip you with a deeper, more actionable understanding, 'All About Love' is absolutely it. Even though I'm only halfway, I can already tell it's going to be one of those books I revisit again and again. It’s a powerful guide to cultivating healthier, more meaningful connections in every aspect of your life. Seriously, pick up a copy if you haven't already!
