Nursing School Must Haves

2024/4/11 Edited to

... Read moreHey future nurses! Finishing up my last semester has really made me think about what truly helped me survive and thrive in nursing school. Like many of you, I definitely fell into the trap of buying everything on those huge 'nursing school supply lists' online, only to find half of it gathering dust. So, building on my initial list, I wanted to dive deeper into why certain items are non-negotiables and offer some practical advice to help you make smart choices from day one. First up, that stethoscope! It's your most important tool. While some swear by Littmann, I personally found my MDF Instruments Rose Gold MD One to be reliable, comfortable, and let's be honest, stylish! The key is to find one that offers clear acoustics for accurate assessments without breaking the bank. Don't cheap out here, but also don't feel pressured to buy the absolute most expensive unless you genuinely prefer it after trying a few. Remember, you'll be using this *constantly*. Next, a good clinical bag is a lifesaver. Mine wasn't just for carrying books; it held my clinical essentials, snacks, and a change of clothes if needed. Look for something durable, easy to clean, with multiple compartments to keep everything organized. You don't want to be fumbling around for your penlight or scissors when time is critical. Speaking of organization, a clipboard is a game-changer. My HOZOL GAUGE Nursing Edition clipboard was a godsend. It kept my papers tidy, provided a hard surface for notes, and having quick reference guides right there was incredibly helpful during clinicals. And don't underestimate the power of a good pencil pouch filled with reliable gel ink pens (because running out of ink mid-shift is the worst!) and a pocket-sized PAPERAGE lined notebook for jotting down important patient info or things to remember. Hydration is crucial! You’ll be on your feet for hours. A trusty insulated water bottle like my STANLEY cup with a leak-resistant lid was essential. Hospital germs are real, and keeping your straw covered is a simple but important step. Trust me, staying hydrated makes a huge difference in your energy levels and focus. And let's not forget the basics: pen lights and shears. You’ll use these more than you think for quick assessments and opening packages. A good pair of trauma shears can save you precious seconds. Finally, a watch with a second hand is absolutely mandatory for taking vitals and timing treatments. While I love my Apple Watch for everyday life, any cheap watch with a clear second hand will do the trick for clinicals. Just make sure it’s easy to read! Beyond these physical items, don't forget the 'invisible' must-haves: Comfortable shoes: This is NOT optional. Your feet will thank you after long shifts. Invest in a good pair of nursing shoes. Study groups/partners: Learning with others can clarify concepts and make studying less lonely. Self-care routine: Nursing school is intense. Schedule time for rest, hobbies, and connecting with loved ones. Burnout is real, so protect your mental health. Positive attitude & resilience: There will be tough days, but remember your 'why.' Every challenge is a learning opportunity. By focusing on these true essentials and preparing yourself mentally, you'll be much better equipped to navigate the exciting, challenging, and incredibly rewarding journey of nursing school. Good luck, future nurses!
