How to have a social life in nursing school

Let’s be honest. Being in nursing school is hard and saying no to friends or family when invited to events or outings is also hard. Finding a good balance between work, school, and my social life has been hard. Here are a few tips I have…

1. Get a planner and USE it. Plan when you’re going to study and what you’re going to study. If you’re anything like me planning is not my thing but this has helped SO much.

2. Don’t procrastinate. I know everyone says this but it’s true. Get your work done as early as you can so if something arises on the weekend and you want to attend you can say yes without having to worry about the schoolwork at home.

3. This one was hard for me as I have always focused on my grades, but you don’t have to be the best and always receive A’s. When I started nursing school all I focused on was the grade I was going to receive. Even though this is still important to me missing one or two points is okay and being able to take a breather is also okay.

4. Have a jar full of the things you want to do when you graduate. Did you have to say no to a concert because of school? No to hanging out with a friend? Put those things in a jar and do them when you graduate. You will be so happy you did!

... Read moreNursing school can be a demanding environment that often sidelines social interactions. However, maintaining a social life is crucial for emotional well-being. Start by setting realistic boundaries; prioritize your schedules to include social time. Joining nursing associations can introduce you to peers who share similar challenges, fostering a sense of community. Consider participating in group study sessions that double as social gatherings, allowing you to share knowledge while bonding with classmates. Engage in extracurricular activities related to nursing, which not only breaks monotony but also enhances your professional network. Another helpful strategy is to leverage technology—use apps that coordinate schedules amongst friends and classmates to plan outings more effectively. This can help you find time for both study and social engagements. Remember, it’s also okay to turn down social invitations if you need downtime for self-care or studying; balance is key. By implementing these strategies, you can navigate nursing school while nurturing your social relationships.
