in kanab, utah lives many beautiful sites! there is so much beautiful land here. hiking, a view of the grand canyon, caves, sand dunes, etc. but as an animal lover, the one thing that most excited me about this place is best friends animal sanctuary.
this place is home to hundreds of rescue animals. they also have a hotel you can stay at, that is pet friendly in so many ways. they have literal cut out cubbies in the hotel and pull out dog beds. they designed it FOR you to bring your fuzzy friend. there’s also a shop there you can go for food during the day, where the included free breakfast is also served, that has all your pet needs as well.
something else i really love about this place is they’re trying to get the whole country to be no-kill. that means no more shelters that euthanize animals for no valid reason! that sounds pretty good to me, and i’d love to see that change.
you can also do sleepovers while you’re here with a rescue cat or dog. i’m not sure exactly how it works, if you get to pick who you have or whatnot, but i regardless think that’s a super cool and unique experience. you get a little guy to hang out with all night, and you get them out of the rescue for a night. i think that’s all around a huge win. there’s also a ton of volunteer opportunities that you can do while you’re visiting!! their website has a list and volunteer sign up!
so, if you’re an animal lover or know one, i would definitely recommend this place. or if you just love nature in general. again, there’s so much to do outside of just this place, that you could make a whole weeks worth here. i definitely have this place on my bucket list, and im not even that huge into the idea of travel!

My visit there was truly unforgettable, nestled amidst breathtaking red rock formations and expansive green pastures. It's not just a place; it's an entire world dedicated to saving lives.
What struck me first was the sheer number of animals they care for – not just cats and dogs, but I even saw a lively pig in its enclosure and other farm animals living their best lives! Every single resident here is given a second chance, and you can feel the love and dedication in every corner. It's truly inspiring to see so many different species living harmoniously, all thanks to the incredible staff and volunteers.
Their mission to make the entire country no-kill deeply resonated with me. Imagine a future where no healthy, adoptable animal is euthanized! Best Friends isn't just hoping for this; they're actively making it happen, one rescue at a time. It’s a powerful movement, and just being there, you feel part of something bigger.
I was so tempted by the volunteer opportunities and the unique 'sleepover' program with a rescue animal. How cool is it to give a sweet cat or dog a night away from the shelter, just to cuddle and play? It's such a win-win, offering comfort to the animals and an incredibly rewarding experience for you. Even if you can't volunteer for long, spending time with these deserving creatures is heartwarming.
And for those traveling with their own pets, their pet-friendly hotel is a dream! Seriously, they have literal cut-out cubbies and pull-out dog beds – they designed it with your furry friends in mind. The dining area, with its large windows and views of the stunning landscape, serves delicious food, including free breakfast, and even stocks pet needs. It's clear they thought of everything to make your stay comfortable for both humans and animals.
