Can we talk about how NERVE wracking hair appointments are?
Yesterday after my hair appointment I was relieved it turned out the way I wanted it too, I was scared to death, thinking I wouldn’t like it but I LOVE IT.
Does anyone else feel this way?

It’s wild, isn’t it? We look forward to a fresh cut or color, but the anxiety leading up to it can be intense. For me, a lot of it comes down to the fear of the unknown. Even when I’ve meticulously saved inspiration photos and thought through exactly what I want, there’s always that little voice asking, 'What if it doesn't turn out like the picture?' Or, 'What if they cut it too short?' I think many of us have had a bad hair experience in the past, and that memory just lingers, making us extra cautious. It’s like a form of hair-PTSD!
Another big stressor is communication. Sometimes it feels like I'm speaking a different language than my stylist. I’ll try to describe 'a subtle reddish-brown with some soft waves,' and then worry if they truly understood my vision. It’s a huge investment, both in time and money, so the pressure to get it right is real. You're sitting there, draped in a cape, feeling vulnerable as someone works on something so integral to your appearance. It's quite a unique situation!
So, how do we navigate this nerve-wracking experience? Over time, I've picked up a few tricks that really help calm my nerves.
First, preparation is key. I always bring a few reference photos – not just one, but a few showing different angles or variations of the style I like. This helps ensure my stylist and I are on the same page. I also try to describe what I don't want, which can sometimes be just as helpful.
Second, don't be afraid to speak up. If something doesn't feel right during the appointment, or if you're unsure about a step, ask questions! A good stylist will appreciate your honesty and want to make sure you're happy. I've learned to confirm things like, 'So, we're aiming for about this much off the length, right?' or 'Will this color fade to a warmer tone?'
Third, choose your stylist wisely. This might sound obvious, but finding someone whose work you admire and who you feel comfortable communicating with makes all the difference. Reading reviews, checking out their social media, and even booking a consultation beforehand can be super helpful.
Finally, manage your expectations. While it’s great to have a vision, sometimes hair has its own ideas! Acknowledge that slight variations might occur, and focus on the overall feeling you want to achieve. For instance, after my recent appointment, I was so relieved and happy with my new reddish-brown, wavy hair – it wasn't an exact replica of a picture, but it captured the essence perfectly.
It’s okay to feel nervous, but with a bit of proactive planning and open communication, you can turn that stressful hair appointment into a truly satisfying and confidence-boosting experience. You deserve to walk out of that salon feeling as happy and relieved as I did, rocking your beautiful new look!
