I absolutely love Shirley temples but I’m cutting down on added sugars this year, so today I made a Shirley Temple inspired refresher. It has zero added sugars and is made from real fruit! It’s sweet, a little dark, and really hydrating and full of fiber.
Ingredients:
• Pitted cherries (I used about 1 cup, frozen)
• Pomegranate seeds (I used about 1 tbsp, frozen)
• Plain, carbonated water
• Monkfruit sweetener
• Lemon juice
• Lime juice
• Fiber powder (optional)
Directions:
1. In a small pot, simmer cherries and pomegranate seeds with a little water. Cook until the fruits have broken down and are easy to gently mash with a fork.
2. Add sweetener and fiber powder (optional). Mix. Give it a taste and add sweetener to your liking. Remove from heat.
3. Optionally, once the juice and fruit have cooled, blend the juice and fruit until smooth.
4. Strain the juice through a mesh strainer or cheese cloth. Discard the pulp.
5. Mix carbonated water and the red juice together. My favorite ratio is 3:1 juice to carbonated water. Add a hint of lemon and lime juice. Top with ice and frozen fruit. Enjoy!
... Read moreAfter enjoying many traditional Shirley Temples throughout my life, I truly started to notice how much added sugar they contained. As someone dedicated to embracing a healthier lifestyle and actively cutting back on sugar, especially during mindful months like #DryJanuary, I was determined to create a delicious alternative that didn't compromise on flavor or that iconic vibrant look. That's precisely how I stumbled upon and perfected this incredible sugar-free Shirley Temple refresher, which I now lovingly refer to as my very own 'Nature's Shirley Temple.' It has quickly become my go-to, guilt-free treat, perfect for any occasion!
One of the aspects I adore most about this recipe is its wonderful flexibility. While I absolutely love the vivid color and tangy sweetness provided by frozen cherries and pomegranate arils – which are key for that classic Shirley Temple hue – you can absolutely experiment with other fruits. I've personally tried it with fresh or frozen raspberries and even a mix of different berries, and the results are consistently fantastic, offering slightly different flavor profiles each time. When selecting your monk fruit sweetener, it’s important to remember that different brands might have varying levels of sweetness, so always taste your mixture before the final blend and adjust to your personal preference. For those who might prefer other sugar substitutes, erythritol or a tiny touch of stevia could also work, though a word of caution: stevia can sometimes impart a distinct aftertaste for some palates.
The crucial straining process, ideally using a cheesecloth, might appear like an extra step, but believe me, it is absolutely worth it for achieving that beautifully smooth, clear, and pulp-free juice. I typically layer my cheesecloth two or three times to ensure even the tiniest fruit fibers are filtered out, and then I gently but firmly squeeze to extract every single drop of that vibrant, flavorful liquid. If you find yourself without cheesecloth on hand, don't despair! A fine-mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter or even a clean nut milk bag can serve as excellent alternatives to achieve a similar result. And here's a little eco-friendly tip: while I usually compost my leftover fruit pulp, some creative cooks blend it into morning smoothies or mix it into oatmeal for an extra boost of natural fiber and antioxidants – giving it a second life!
To truly elevate this healthy mocktail and make it feel extra special, I often enjoy playing around with garnishes. A couple of fresh cherries, a thin slice of lime or lemon, or even a sprig of fresh mint can transform it into something that looks and feels like it came straight from a gourmet cafe. I find serving it over plenty of ice, sometimes adding extra frozen fruit (like more cherries or pomegranate arils) for a super chill and visually appealing presentation, makes it even more delightful. It’s absolutely perfect for a relaxing evening at home, a festive backyard BBQ, or simply as a refreshing pick-me-up during a busy day. It truly embodies what a 'Shirley Temple refresher' should be – light, incredibly flavorful, and deeply satisfying without any of the traditional sugar guilt. Plus, with the thoughtful addition of optional fiber powder, it’s not just a delicious drink but also a genuinely hydrating and health-conscious choice that supports your well-being. It’s my little secret to enjoying a classic treat, healthier!
