Saw this comment on a post of mine the other day… so I wanted to share my long term experience for anyone who sees comments like this & feels scared to start their retinoid journey. I’ve absolutely experienced phases of barrier damage as my skin adjusted to new prescription strengths over the past several years, but those phases always passed. 7.5 years later I am so glad I trusted my derm! Prescription retinoids obviously aren’t for everyone, but if your derm prescribes them for you, don’t let the internet scare you out of following their guidance!

From personal experience, I can assure you that while prescription retinoids such as tretinoin and tazarotene are potent and sometimes cause initial skin barrier issues, these effects often subside with consistent use and proper skincare adjustments. Over the years, I’ve encountered several phases where my skin felt compromised — dryness, redness, and sensitivity were common. However, this was part of the skin's adjustment process, and I found that incorporating gentle moisturizers, avoiding harsh cleansers, and gradually increasing retinoid strength helped restore my skin’s resilience. It is crucial to follow your dermatologist's advice closely; they tailor treatments to your skin’s needs, which helps minimize risks. Don’t be discouraged by alarmist comments or overgeneralized warnings online—your experience can be different and positive. Also, protecting your skin from sun exposure with daily sunscreen is vital when using retinoids, as they can increase photosensitivity. Through perseverance and care, I’ve maintained healthy, clearer skin over seven years. If you are starting retinoids, listen to your body, introduce products slowly, and seek support from a skincare professional rather than relying solely on internet commentary. Your skin can adapt and improve with time, leading to long-term benefits.
