And this isn’t just the Dyson! This goes for any tool that has brush attachments. But I mention Dyson here because this is definitely the tool I see people make this mistake with the most. They were really the first air styling tool to popularize the concept of no heat damage, so a lot of people mistakenly think that means they can’t cause damage at all. And then feel confused and upset (understandably), when they started noticing more breakage.

But the truth is that any air styler with brush attachments can still cause mechanical damage and breakage, even if they are preventing extreme heat damage. That doesn’t mean you can’t use them, it just means you should use them as carefully and gently as possible to reduce damage and breakage! Move the attachment through your hair slowly, twist gently, never tug or pull through tangles, and if you feel your hair catching while you’re brushing, stop, release your hair from the brush, and try that piece again. And be extra gentle if you have hair that is fine, curly or coily. These hair types are more fragile and susceptible to mechanical breakage than others.
