Here are my top 5 recommendations for scalp serums that I am officially adding to The Abbey Yung Method! I’ve spent the last 8+ months researching this category because it’s one I knew I had to approach differently than others. This category is extremely complex not only because of all of the different claimed benefits and the different types of evidence/research available from brands (or lack thereof in many cases), but also because of the FDA restrictions on what brands legally can and cannot say. I also obviously can’t speak to personal results like a reduction in shedding for all of these products at the same time, especially when I wasn’t experiencing hair loss prior to using scalp serums. So what felt right to me is to reach out to all of the brands I was reviewing to get information on key ingredients, clinical testing, patents, publications, etc. so that I could still provide a handful of options for you to choose from that I felt confident recommending. I also of course still tested out every serum to make sure that I liked the texture and that I didn’t have any issues with it (like greasy residue), so that was a key part of my recommendation too. Based on all of that, I landed on this lineup that I think is a good place to start if you’re interested in using a scalp serum for scalp health, healthier hair growth, or improved hair retention. More information on how these serums work, key ingredients, supporting evidence, sources, etc on all of the scalp serums I looked into and why I did/didn’t add them (like Kerastase, The Ordinary & Cecred), is on my YT channel! You’ll see lots of videos with way more info than I have time to share in short videos here.

... Read moreFinding the perfect scalp serum can feel overwhelming with so many options promising miraculous results. My deep dive into the Abbey Yung Method for scalp health isn't just about listing products; it's about understanding why certain serums deliver on their promises and how to use them effectively for real, visible changes. First, let's talk about the powerhouse ingredients that truly make a difference for hair growth and scalp health. When I evaluate a serum, I'm looking for clinically supported compounds. For instance, you might see terms like 'Micro-Peptide XP Complex' in some products. Peptides are fantastic because they can help stimulate hair follicles, improve scalp circulation, and even strengthen the hair shaft. Other ingredients I actively seek out include redensyl, procapil, and capixyl, which are often backed by studies showing their ability to reduce hair fall and promote new growth. Natural extracts like rosemary oil and peppermint oil also have promising research behind their ability to support a healthy hair growth cycle, offering a gentler approach for those with sensitive scalps. It's about looking beyond flashy labels and checking for actual scientific backing, just like I did when researching popular brands like Nioxin or Kerastase. Integrating a scalp serum into your routine, especially if you have natural hair, requires a thoughtful approach. For all hair types, consistency is key! Most serums are designed to be applied daily or every other day, usually on a clean, damp scalp after washing, or directly onto a dry scalp. Make sure to section your hair and apply the serum directly to the scalp, not just the hair strands. Gently massaging it in for a few minutes can also help improve absorption and stimulate blood flow to the follicles. If you have natural hair, pay extra attention to ensuring the serum absorbs well without leaving heavy residue, which could weigh down curls or cause product build-up. Look for lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas. Some serums might need to be rinsed out after a certain period, while others are leave-in treatments; always follow the product's specific instructions. When I was testing products to make my top 5 list, avoiding any greasy feeling was a huge factor, as I know how important that is for maintaining hair's natural bounce and volume, especially in textured hair. Finally, let's address the 'don't waste your money' aspect. Many commercial products, even from well-known brands like Pantene or Dove, might market themselves as a 'hair fall defense serum' or promise 'advanced growth.' However, without robust clinical trials and a solid ingredient list, these claims can be misleading. Be wary of serums that rely heavily on generic oils or lack transparency about their active ingredients and concentrations. My method involved scrutinizing every brand, looking for patents and published research, not just marketing hype. It’s also crucial to manage your expectations; hair growth is a slow process. It typically takes 3-6 months of consistent use to see noticeable results from any effective scalp treatment. So, be patient, be consistent, and choose wisely based on evidence, not just catchy slogans!
