How often do you get a babysitter as a SAHM?
I rarely get a babysitter just for a break. Maybe once every couple months, but I don’t actually take a break, I clean, grocery shop, etc; but, I do feel it’s important to take time for yourself. I usually like to get a babysitter when I know everyone will be out of the house, that way I know I have peace and quiet to get done what I need to do.
It's a question I hear so often from fellow stay-at-home moms: 'How often do you actually get a babysitter?' And honestly, the answer is rarely simple. Like many of us, I've found that even when I do manage to secure a few hours, those precious moments often get swallowed up by chores. We envision a spa day or a quiet coffee, but reality often means a solo grocery run or finally tackling that overflowing laundry mountain. It's a common SAHM dilemma, isn't it? We crave a break, but then feel guilty or pressured to be 'productive' with our kid-free time. But let's be real, true self-care isn't about being productive; it's about recharging. I've learned that whether it's once a week, once a month, or even just a few times a year, the quality of that time away is what truly matters. For some, a weekly afternoon to hit the gym or grab a coffee with a friend is non-negotiable. For others, like me, it might be a bi-monthly escape to simply sit in a quiet house, not cleaning, not working, just *being*. The frequency really depends on your personal needs, your budget, and your support system. When thinking about 'how often,' consider what you need to feel re-energized. Is it just an hour to grocery shop in peace, or do you need a full afternoon to reset your mental health? Many SAHMs find that even a short, regular break can prevent burnout. Perhaps you rely on a trusted family member once a week, or you've found an affordable teen babysitter for a monthly date night. Don't underestimate the power of delegating childcare, even for seemingly mundane tasks. That quiet hour you get to clean the bathroom alone can feel like a mini-vacation compared to doing it with a toddler 'helping'! I've found that planning ahead makes a huge difference. Instead of waiting until you're at your breaking point, try to schedule in that 'me time' proactively. Maybe it's a fixed day each month, or you swap childcare with another SAHM friend. The goal isn't necessarily to get a babysitter 'often' by someone else's standards, but often enough for you to feel like you're not constantly running on empty. Remember, taking care of yourself isn't selfish; it makes you a better mom, partner, and person. It's about filling your cup so you can pour into your family without feeling completely depleted. So, let's chat: how do you prioritize getting that much-needed time away, and what does a true 'break' look like for you as a SAHM?
