The truth about affording the SAHM life
People always ask “how do you afford to stay home?” and to be honest… it’s not easy lol. It’s a lot of trade-offs and planning! But here’s what helps me make it work:
1. We barely eat out. Groceries are expensive enough, so I cook at home instead of grabbing takeout.
2. Homemade over premade. From snacks to baby food, I try to make things myself. It saves so much money (plus it’s healthier and I love knowing what’s in our food).
3. Budgeting is non-negotiable. Every dollar has a place. I track bills, groceries, and monthly goals so nothing slips.
4. No “luxuries.” Nails, hair, lash fills, subscriptions… all gone. I miss them sometimes, but I’d rather have the time with my baby.
5. I get creative. DIY gifts, home projects, and secondhand finds keep our lifestyle comfortable without overspending.
It’s not about doing without, it’s about deciding what’s worth it. And for me, being home every day with my little one is SO worth!!
If you’re a stay-at-home mom too, what’s one thing you’ve cut back on that made the biggest difference?✨👇

Choosing to be a stay-at-home mom requires thoughtful financial planning and lifestyle adjustments, and many families find success by making intentional choices that align with their values and budget. For instance, meal planning and cooking at home rather than frequently eating out can significantly reduce food expenses. Homemade meals, including baby food and snacks, not only save money but also ensure healthier options with full control over ingredients. Budgeting is key. Tracking every dollar with detailed records of bills, groceries, and monthly goals prevents overspending and helps identify priorities. Using budgeting apps or spreadsheets can make this process easier and more effective. Cutting back on non-essential luxuries such as salon visits, subscription services, and designer purchases can free up funds without sacrificing family time. Many stay-at-home moms share that while they occasionally miss small indulgences, the extra time spent with their children is their top priority. Creativity in gift-giving, using DIY projects, home crafts, and sourcing items secondhand also contribute to keeping expenses low while maintaining a comfortable lifestyle. This approach encourages sustainability and reduces unnecessary consumption. Lastly, it's important to remember that this lifestyle is about balance and deciding what truly matters. For many, the value of being present with their children every day outweighs the costs or sacrifices made. Community support, whether through local groups or online platforms like Lemon8, can provide encouragement and ideas to navigate the challenges of affording the SAHM life.
