Basking Platform 🐉
I had a few people ask me how I built the platform that I have in the dragons enclosures, but I'm not the greatest at explaining on video, so here are some progress pictures I took.
Picture 1 - Completed platform.
Picture 2 - I wanted to add something to the platform that added some belly heat/absorbed heat, so I was able to find some ceramic tiles.
Picture 3 - I used UNTREATED plywood to create the laying surface.
Due to enclosure interior lengths and widths varying, I highly recommend measuring multiple times.
Picture 4 & 5 - I cut dowel rods to make the top portion approximately 12in off the ground. I used regular UNTREATED 2in by 4in pieces of wood to create the steps.
Everything was assembled using reptile safe adhesive & screws.
Picture 6 - Final fitting to make sure it fit before adding the texture layer. It is definitely a tight squeeze, so if you are using similar measurements, please account for that.
Picture 7 & 8 - I wanted to replicate a cave texture and something similar to their desert natural habitat. In order to create this, I saturated strips of fabric in Zoo Med Excavator Clay. The fabric is optional, but it definitely makes things easier to apply.
After drying, which takes about 3 or 4 days, it was sealed using a matte finish modge podge.
Building a custom basking platform for your bearded dragon is one of the most rewarding DIY projects you can undertake for your scaly friend. It's not just about providing a spot to warm up; it’s crucial for their overall health, including proper digestion, immune system function, and vital UV-B absorption. When I first started planning my DIY reptile basking platform, I quickly realized that safety and functionality had to be my top priorities, even before aesthetics. One of the most important considerations is material choice. The original guide emphasizes untreated plywood, and I cannot stress this enough – always ensure any wood you use is free from chemicals, glues, or preservatives that could be toxic to your reptile. This is paramount for creating a safe bearded dragon basking enclosure. For the surface, incorporating white ceramic tiles for belly heat was a game-changer. These tiles act as a heat sink, absorbing warmth from your basking lamp and radiating it upwards, providing that critical belly heat bearded dragons need to digest their food efficiently. It mimics the warm rocks they would naturally seek out in their desert habitat, offering a stable and consistent warmth. Beyond the primary structure of untreated plywood, dowel rods, and 2x4s, think about texture and enrichment. Replicating a textured brown surface isn't just for looks; it provides grip, helps with shedding, and offers a more stimulating environment. While Zoo Med Excavator Clay works wonderfully to achieve that natural, rocky feel, you could also explore other reptile-safe options like sanded grout or specific vivarium-safe epoxy coatings, ensuring they are fully cured and non-toxic before introducing your dragon. The goal is to create varying surfaces and levels that encourage natural climbing and exploration within their bearded dragon basking enclosure. Placement and stability are also key. The height of your basking platform, supported by sturdy dowel rods and 2x4s, needs to be carefully measured to ensure optimal basking temperatures and proper UV-B exposure without causing burns. Always use a thermometer to check the surface temperature of your basking spot, aiming for the recommended range for your specific species. A wobbly platform can be a source of stress or even injury, so make sure all components are securely fastened with reptile safe adhesive & screws. Finally, don't overlook maintenance. A DIY reptile basking platform will need regular cleaning to prevent bacteria buildup. For textured surfaces, I find a stiff brush and a reptile-safe disinfectant work best, followed by a thorough rinse. The ceramic tiles are usually easy to wipe down. Observing my bearded dragon happily utilizing his custom-built platform, soaking up the warmth, and exploring the different levels makes all the effort worthwhile. It's a fantastic way to provide a rich and healthy environment tailored specifically for their needs.
