How to stop your dog from sleeping in your bed

As I’m posting this, Titan, my golden retriever, is currently asleep at the foot of my bed. So let’s take a minute to meet the dog behind the post!

This is Titan. He is a 1.5 year old and 100+ lb golden retriever. He is unbelievably and uncannily smart, and also just so happens to be my best friend- I know, I’ve reached the cliche dog mom stage.

Titan would like to add that he believes dogs belong in the bed.

Many pet owners face the challenge of transitioning their dogs to sleep in their own space. Start by creating a comfortable sleeping area for your dog with their favorite blanket and toys. Positive reinforcement works wonders—reward your dog whenever they choose their bed over yours. Gradually train them by establishing a bedtime routine that involves settling them in their designated spot. Another approach involves using barriers, like baby gates, to prevent access to your bed, especially during the night. This might require some patience as your dog adjusts to the change. Consistency is crucial; consistently directing your dog to their own bed helps them understand the new sleeping arrangement. Lastly, consider the emotional side—dogs thrive on companionship, and your presence is comforting. Spend quality time with your dog near their bed to help build a positive association. Understanding their needs while implementing these strategies can pave the way for smoother transitions for both you and your furry friend.
