Research shows that the neck is extremely vulnerable, and strangulation has been identified as the second leading cause of strokes in women under 40. This danger is compounded by findings such as elevated levels of S100B protein in people regularly involved in choking during sex—a clear marker for brain damage. Moreover, MRI studies reveal altered brain communication patterns even in the absence of visible neck injuries, affecting crucial areas responsible for movement, awareness, and emotional processing. For those who choose to include choking in their intimate life, it is vital to approach it with extreme caution and informed consent. Education about the risks, open communication between partners, and having safety measures like clear signals or immediate cessation protocols can help mitigate some dangers. Still, the key takeaway is that there is no completely safe way to choke someone during sex due to the risk of oxygen deprivation to the brain. Sharing this knowledge from my own journey and research underscores the importance of safety and awareness rather than taboo silence. Being informed empowers adults to make decisions that respect both pleasure and wellbeing.
