One crucial aspect that often goes unnoticed is the bottleneck in forensic systems. Morgues and forensic labs are overwhelmed, leading to significant delays in identification and repatriation of bodies. This saturation places enormous emotional strain on families who tirelessly search for their loved ones with little institutional support. Another challenge is the discrepancy in official statistics and the reality on the ground. While the government reports over 130,000 missing persons, advocacy groups argue the true figures may be higher due to underreporting and systemic issues in data collection. Additionally, tensions between authorities and civil society groups complicate efforts to produce transparent and actionable registries. The crisis also underscores the broader security challenges in Mexico, linked to organized crime and impunity. This environment makes investigations and recovery operations difficult and dangerous. Many families resort to independent searches when official channels prove inadequate. From my engagement with various community groups, one message stands clear: there's an urgent need to improve forensic capacities, provide psychological and legal support to families, and establish trust between communities and authorities.
