⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ (4.5/5)

I really enjoyed this one, but that ending felt… incomplete. I’m honestly wondering if there’s going to be a book two because I was left with way too many questions.

One thing I just couldn’t get past was how none of the adults seemed to realize what was happening. And somehow the entire town knew everything while also acting like they knew nothing at the same time.

Marigold has already been through so much. She’s dealing with anxiety, a severe bedbug phobia, and drug addiction when her family moves from California after her mom lands a job that comes with free housing. They’re the first family to move onto Maple Street after it was burned down, only to realize they’re being used as the face of the neighborhood’s gentrification.

As the story unfolds, you learn Cedarville is controlled by one powerful family determined to push longtime residents out so they can rebuild the town under their own rules. They even weaponize the justice system, giving people ridiculously long prison sentences for minor marijuana charges just to remove them from the community.

Overall, this was a really good read. I just wish there had been a little less preaching and fewer bedbug facts. 😅 There were definitely moments where I was yelling at the book and had several “OMG!” reactions.

Tiffany D. Jackson remains an automatic-read author for me.

... Read moreReading this novel felt like diving into a deep, emotional experience where complicated themes are woven seamlessly into a suspenseful and thought-provoking narrative. The protagonist Marigold’s struggles with anxiety and a bedbug phobia add authenticity and vulnerability to her character, making her journey relatable and compelling. What struck me most was how the story vividly portrayed gentrification's impact on communities. The depiction of Maple Street’s destruction and the coercive tactics used by a powerful family to control Cedarville reflect real-world scenarios where justice systems are manipulated to displace residents. This element added a layer of harsh reality that resonates beyond fiction. The imagery of the burned-down neighborhood and Marigold’s role as the 'face' of gentrification left me reflecting on the social and economic dynamics in many cities today. It also sparked thoughts about how narratives and histories are shaped by those in power, often silencing the voices of longtime residents. While the book contains detailed information about bedbugs, which at times felt a bit much, it works metaphorically to show the invasive and persistent challenges Marigold faces, both internal and external. Those moments provided an unusual but effective tension within the story. One of the novel’s subtle strengths is its commentary on community silence and complicity—the adults’ obliviousness despite underlying awareness highlights societal tendencies to ignore uncomfortable truths. Like the reviewer, I found myself craving closure, hoping for a sequel to answer lingering questions, especially about the justice system’s manipulation and how Marigold’s story will evolve. Fans of psychological thrillers that engage with social issues, much like the films "Get Out" and the series "When No One Is Watching," will find this book resonates on multiple levels, blending suspense with urgent societal commentary. Tiffany D. Jackson continues to be a must-read author for those who appreciate stories that challenge and provoke thought while delivering thrilling narratives.

if you’re bad at being consistent, read this ➡️
my whole life i defined consistency as perfection. if i slipped up, missed a day, made a mistake, then in my head i “broke my streak” and had to start all over again (which is super discouraging) but consistency isn’t doing everything exactly right every day. it’s about showing up to the table -

It started during my pregnancy in 2021. I had hyperemesis gravardium as well as POTS really, really bad for the entire duration of my pregnancy. I was sooo frickin sick. I hardly got out of bed, let alone did my hair. I wore it up in a bun 24/7. Then the baby came, and postpartum depression hit. So
