DREADHEAD SCHOOL!📚
Starting my dreadlock journey as a teenager was one of the best decisions I've made, but let me tell you, it felt like I was enrolling in a whole new 'Dreadhead School' at first! There's so much to learn, from the initial installation to mastering the art of the perfect nonchalant dreadhead look you see all over TikTok. For anyone thinking about getting locs in their teen years, my biggest piece of advice is research, research, research! I wish I had known more about the different methods – coils, two-strand twists, interlocking – and what suited my hair type best. My journey started with two-strand twists, and the budding phase was definitely a test of patience. Don't worry if your locs don't look 'perfect' right away; that's part of the authentic journey. Embrace the frizz and the new textures! One of the coolest things about having locs as a teen is how versatile they are and how they naturally lend themselves to that 'nonchalant dreadhead' aesthetic. What does that even mean? To me, it's about looking effortlessly cool, confident, and a little bit edgy. It's not about trying too hard; it’s about letting your locs do their thing. On TikTok, you see so many people rocking this vibe – from simple updos to free-flowing styles. I've found that less is often more. A simple half-up, half-down, or just letting them hang free, can give off that perfect 'I woke up like this' cool. Maintaining teen locs during school and social life can seem daunting. My routine is pretty simple: I wash them every 2-3 weeks with a clarifying shampoo to prevent buildup, and then follow up with a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Keeping them moisturized is key to preventing breakage, especially if you're active. I use a light dreadlock spray or rosewater daily. Protective styles are also a lifesaver, especially for gym class or when I just want my hair out of my face. Braids, twists, or a simple bun can protect your locs and keep them neat. The 'Dreadhead School' teaches you patience, self-acceptance, and how to truly express yourself. Don't be afraid to experiment with different styles as your locs mature. Following other loc'd teens on TikTok has been a huge source of inspiration and community for me. We share tips, celebrate milestones, and even commiserate over the occasional bad hair day. It’s more than just a hairstyle; it’s a lifestyle and a community. If you're a teen considering locs, go for it! It's a journey filled with growth, style, and a whole lot of self-love.
