CPR AWARENESS WEEK
Everyone should learn CPR. You never know whose life you may save.
Understanding CPR and being ready to act can make a critical difference during emergencies involving cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR has become recognized as an effective way to assist adults who suddenly collapse from cardiac arrest. The method involves calling 911 immediately and pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rhythm of 100 to 120 compressions per minute, similar to the beat of popular songs like "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. This technique increases survival chances by maintaining blood flow to vital organs until professional help arrives. For infants and children, providing rescue breaths along with chest compressions remains essential because breathing issues often cause their cardiac arrests. The recommendation is to give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. This dual approach addresses the most common causes and emergencies in younger age groups. Learning these steps through certified CPR training not only equips you with knowledge but also the confidence to act under pressure. In my personal experience, attending a CPR class helped me overcome initial hesitation about intervening in emergencies. The practical training and guidance made it clear how straightforward and lifesaving CPR can be. Moreover, knowing that over 70% of cardiac arrests happen at home motivates me to encourage family members and friends to get trained as well, because their actions might be the difference between life and death. The American Heart Association’s support of the Nation of Lifesavers initiative further highlights the importance of community preparedness. Even if you are not a healthcare professional, your readiness to perform CPR can protect someone you love—be it a child, parent, or friend. Remember, acting promptly with Hands-Only CPR and contacting emergency services immediately offers the best chance of survival during out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. Encouraging awareness and participation in CPR training strengthens our collective ability to save lives.
