Teddy’s Trying Soccer!

Signing up a toddler for their first sports season is both exciting and overwhelming. As Teddy just turned three, the timing was right to introduce him to team sports, particularly soccer. One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding a winter league that accepted kids so young, but once we found one, the anticipation began. From a mom's perspective, the chaos and unpredictability of 3-year-old soccer are all part of the fun. Unlike older kids’ organized games, this age group’s focus tends to revolve around just having fun, learning basic skills, and social interaction. This meant being prepared for lots of running in random directions and moments of distraction—which, honestly, made the experience endearing and charming. Preparing for the season involved learning about the right gear for a toddler—shinpads, tiny cleats, and appropriate sportswear—which are not as straightforward as they seem. Luckily, the league provided good guidance through emails, making the process less stressful. Balancing work and the soccer schedule was another hurdle. Having only one work-from-home day on Mondays, which coincided with Teddy’s games, meant juggling conference calls and cheering on the sidelines simultaneously—a true test of multitasking abilities! Besides the sport itself, an unexpected benefit was the chance to meet other moms. Having lived in Massachusetts for several years, making mom friends hadn't been easy. Toddler soccer became a social lifeline, creating opportunities to connect, share experiences, and support each other, enriching both my and Teddy’s daily life. Overall, starting Teddy with soccer has been a joyful journey of growth, community, and learning. For parents considering toddler sports, my advice is to embrace the chaos, enjoy the little wins, and cherish the moments of connection both on and off the field.
