The One Thing I Hate About Daycare

If I had to pick one thing I dislike about daycare, it would be naptime. Not because naps are bad, but because when Teddy naps during the day, bedtime slowly drifts later and later…and suddenly it’s 10pm and I still haven’t prepped for the next day.

That part is hard. Long evenings, overtired energy, and the quiet realization that my own downtime has officially vanished.

But here’s the thing: I get it. His teachers need that break. They’re caring for a room full of preschoolers all day long, teaching, redirecting, comforting, and encouraging. That pause in the day matters, and they more than deserve it.

Any frustration I feel melts away when I see everything Teddy is learning. He comes home surprising me daily with new words, new ideas, little facts I didn’t even know he knew. I can see how much he’s growing, socially, emotionally, and cognitively, and it’s incredible to watch.

So while naptime might be my least favorite part of daycare, it’s a small tradeoff for a place where he feels safe, supported, and excited to learn. Late bedtimes are temporary. This season of growth is something I’ll always be grateful for. #momsoflemon8 #momsover30 #parenting #daycare #preschool

... Read moreAs a parent navigating daycare routines, I’ve found that naptime, while essential for both children and teachers, often throws off our family’s evening schedule. When my child naps at preschool, bedtime tends to drift later—sometimes as late as 10pm—making evenings hectic and leaving me scrambling to prep for the next day without any downtime. Many parents face this same issue, especially because preschool teachers schedule naps to recharge after managing energetic classrooms filled with active kids. Understanding this has helped me appreciate the need for naptime as more than just a break; it supports the well-being of caregivers who tirelessly teach and nurture our children. Although late bedtimes can be exhausting, the benefits are undeniable. Daycare is a place where kids develop socially and cognitively, picking up new words, ideas, and skills daily—evident in the way my child surprises me with new facts and friendships formed at preschool. Watching my little one grow emotionally and intellectually in a safe and supportive environment makes those long evenings and tired energy worthwhile. To ease the bedtime challenges, I’ve adjusted our home routine to include calming activities and a consistent wind-down time that helps my child transition from daycare stimulations to restful sleep. Some parents find that slowly adjusting bedtimes earlier on weekends or limiting naps at home can help reset their child’s internal clock. Ultimately, while naptime at daycare can feel like an inconvenience, it’s a crucial part of a balanced preschool day. It helps teachers stay energized to provide the best care and creates moments for quiet reflection and rest for little ones. Managing the late evenings requires patience and creative adjustments, but recognizing the value of this pause can transform frustration into gratitude during this important season of growth.

How to Respond to Daycare Parents

Any positive experiences with daycare for kids?
I’m really struggling thinking about how I’ve been with her constantly for 1 month and soon have to put him in daycare because of work. And the well-meaning moms who either live in a country with generous leave, or who stay home, that pity me and say, “I couldn’t imagine!” just make me feel worse,
