I Thought He Wanted to Try Sushi

For the last few days, Teddy has been asking to go to “78” for sushi.

No matter how many questions I asked, he doubled down. I was completely convinced I was missing something.

The answer wasn’t even close to what I expected.

Please tell me I’m not the only parent who’s had to play detective trying to translate a 3-year-old.

In this story, Teddy’s repeated requests to go to “78” for sushi initially baffled his parent, leading to several attempts to understand what he really meant. From personal experience, toddlers mix their interpretations of language and concepts in ways that can be both frustrating and endearing. In this case, "78" was not just a random number but a child’s way of referring to a local convenience store, like 7-Eleven, where he hoped to get a sushi slushy or snack. This highlights how young children associate numbers, places, and foods in unique ways that adults don’t always grasp immediately. As parents, it’s important to patiently engage with children’s clues and questions—even if they double down on a phrase you don’t understand at first. Playing detective helps uncover their world and supports language development. Additionally, this story is a reminder that children’s explanations might not align with adult logic but make perfect sense in their minds. Sharing these amusing and relatable moments with fellow parents can be incredibly reassuring. It shows that trying to translate a toddler’s speech is a common challenge. It also emphasizes the joy in watching little ones grow as they express their desires, often in unexpected ways. If you find yourself puzzled by your child’s quirky requests, try to follow their thought process and explore local places, sounds, or routines they might be referencing. Sometimes, the answer is just a simple trip down memory lane or a favorite spot disguised in childlike language. Embracing these moments with humor and curiosity turns everyday parenting into a delightful adventure.
